Red face Nomenclature ?

What is the correct name for the little symbols on older model S&Ws that appear before and after the address and patent lines.

I'm glad you asked that. I don't know the answer but I'm glad you asked. Are they "cartouches"? I've always liked them..along with that symbol on the Mod 28 Hwy Patrolmen. I await for the answers also.

That's the one I've always wondered about.

I posted the answer to that on the "Ultimate Highway Patrolman Thread" and got the answer right from the source. I would bet the answer to the OP's question is much the same.

I think that they're talking about that lop-sided maltese cross looking critter on older revolver barrels.

In most contexts these would be called Printer's "Bugs".

Talking

I was referring to the "maltese cross" or "knight's cross" like on the old triplelocks, N frames, etc.

Question "Cartouche"????

I always thought of it as a "cartouche" that was used to start and end the roll marks. But then again...what do I know.

Yes...

In most contexts, these would be known as 'Printer's Bugs'.

Historically, Printer's Bugs were any of a variety of small symbols or forms, used in various styalistic ways in complimenting or ormamenting or boardering compositions of Words or other elements of Set Type layouts.

As for what Smith & Wesson called them, I do not know...but, if S&W were in keeping with tradition, they would have called them 'Bugs'.

Default More info.....

And as a side note, I looked on all my other Smiths (starting with my 1950 K38) that were made after the K22 and none of them have the bugs.
