Welcome to the Forum.
The half moon clips are not as popular these days. Most folks use full moon clips.
Modern .45 ACP ball ammo is safe, providing the revolver is in good firing condition. Make sure the bore is clear; I've seen a few older stored guns that needed a good cleaning before firing.
Ranch Products makes very nice clips. Brownells should have them.
Actually, you don't NEED the clips in a S&W to shoot it. The clips make extraction of fired brass much easier though. You can shoot with out the clips and either shake the empties out or punch em out with a pencil.
Some Colt 1917s were manufactured without shoulders in the cylinder and these need clips to fire.

45 Auto Rim Ctges
They also make a 45 Auto Rim ctge that will fit in your 1917, without the half or full moon clips. They will extract like a normal ctge.

Haven't seen a box of .45 Auto Rim factory ammo in ages. Does anyone still make it?

I second the recommendation for full moon clips, they are a lot more robust than half moon clips. Midway USA has the full moon clips too, the 5 pack of steel clips by Wilson Combat is 4.99...

If he's really wanting half-moons tell him to check Numrich Arms. They had a bunch a couple of months ago, I'd been looking for some for a while and snagged a bunch.
Just checked, they still have them - Half Moon Clips, .45 ACP (Pair)

I think Remington does a run of these from time to time.
Cor-Bon is really pricey, at least in my experience.
If you don't reload, you are way better off buying some .45 ACP and getting moon clips. I like third-moon clips myself.
This photo illustrates the third-, half-, and full-moon clips, Left to Right:

Moon Clip Tool
Don't forget this little gizmo. You don't need it to load the clips, but it makes it a lot easier and faster to remove the empties.

I will also mention the plastic (actually, nylon or delrin or some synthetic) RIMZ moon clips, which can be loaded and unloaded without a tool. Some people don't like them, but I do. They are a little pricy compared to the metal ones, but if you need only a few they may be the way to go.

And Buffalo Bore makes a couple of 45 AR loads - but I would not recommend them for older guns.
Take care,

That's another thing about Cor-Bon. They have a rep for being a little on the "warm" side. May be a little more than you want granddad's old gun to handle.
