SW 28-2 price check
Attached is a picture of a 1961 "S" series, 4.5 in BBL, 28-2 in about 95% condition.
I just paid $500 for it with no box, papers or tools.
Is this a reasonable price?
second question-- would an "S" series 28-2 be more valuable than an "N" series assuming they are in the same condition?
Thanks-

"Is this a reasonable price?"
Yes, I'd say so. It has grips worth more than a hundred bucks. And to a collector.... as in most readers of this forum, S trumps N prefixes.
28's are headed north in price. Do a "completed auction" search on Gunbroker and look how NIB examples are bringing Mod 27 money.
Deals are still out there, I think you got a pretty good one.

In my neck of the woods, any N Frame in that kind of shape is a deal at $500. I have to say "You done good"!

You did well. I just purchased an S # first year of issue for half again as much as you got that one. But it sure is nice.

I visited two gun shows this past weekend. I watched as 3 M28-2's sold. The least expensive gun, a N serial number, sold for $595, plus tax. So, you did very well. Why don't I see these "gems"?

Last one I purchased was about a year back, a 6 inch 28-2. As New, no box or nada, I paid $585 which is decent for the NE part of the country.
I think you did really well and you will really enjoy the 28-2, an awesome gun!

JCS&W I was at the Marieta show Sun morning, I purchased a 28-2 around noon for $495 out the door. It was a 6in in excellent condition. Near as I can tell from the serial number it was produced near the end of the model line, serial # 95xxxx or 98xxxx. Duh can't remember. Metal was 98+(I'm not an expert at grading guns!). Only real problem was the target grips had a small chip on the bottom front where the halves meet and some scratches on the bottom of the wood. They still had a 4in and another 6in with rubber grips. The 6in rubber had $595, not sure of the 4in.

A pretty good price. And yes, an S prefix is typically more desirable than an N prefix. Well done.

You are aware they didn't make a 4.5" HP. They were only made in 4" and 6" versions. Measured from the face of the cylinder to the muzzle, your picture shows a 4" gun.

I paid a little more than that for a NIB 28-2 4" this past weekend. Looking at the S/N, its probably from 1969. It was so nice I just decided to have it.

There is a dealer who brings the same M28 4" to gun show after gun show. He has it priced at $650 which must be a little high as it hasn't sold in about a year. It has non-diamond stocks. It looks to be in great (maybe like new) condition with a box (I never asked to examine it because I wasn't serious about buying it and besides, he comes across as a bit of an ... well ... "difficult guy to like")
Anyways, that makes your deal look darn good.

i had tried to sell this 4" 28-2, w. box and in excellent condition for $550...then $500. posted it on this site and elsewhere, but no takers. took it to a gun show, priced to sell at $450...no takers.
but i'm now glad that it didn't sell. just days ago a gentleman traded a very nice 1953 K22 Combat Masterpiece for it.
out with the old...
in with the new...

Too bad I missed it or I would have bought it from you at that price. I've been after a nice 4" 28-2 for a while but they just keep eluding me somehow.
I cam across one I really wanted on an online auction a few months ago but of course I was overseas at the time and unable to purchase it...

Nice guns. I'll be able to pick up my new 28-2 4'' 95%+ finish with magna stocks Tuesday. I lucked out because it even came with the box for $595. If its been shot it hasn't been much.

Timberpigeon,
Yep, I'd of paid that much for it.
You got a deal, not a great deal, but a deal just the same.
They are only going to go up.

I paid $650.00 for my 4", Model 28, "N" series, in very good condition, with the box and some of the papers a few months ago. They had it priced at $700.00 originally.
On the other hand, I bought a "S" series 6", no box, no papers a few months later for $400.00. That one did have a big scratch on the cylinder.
I'd say $500.00 was about average.

Where those 28-2's at the Marietta show? If they were I did not see them, but I was trapped behind our tables most of the time. My partners are at the Eastman show this weekend, but I had to pass on this one. There are just too many show around here to keep up with all of them. I'm taking a break, even though I like the NE Atlanta show.

I just saw a 28-2 S six inch at my local gunshow yesterday. it had diamond stocks in the 23 or 32 xxxx range for 500.00 out the door.N frames are not my thing but it was in such great shape with almost no turn ring i had to pick it up to admire it. i kept his card in case i changed my mind but k frames are for me in general. The show closed early because of hurricane irene. hope it helped.

I just bought a mint 28-2 in the box with factory letter made in 1969. Local gunshop owner is selling off part of his personal collection. I paid $800.00, maybe a bit high but this gun is cherry.

I would have done the same thing probibly. I'm tired of passing on guns I like because of a few bucks, when certain types and conditions are becoming hard to come by.

I agree!!!!!! I can't tell you how many times $25.00 - $50.00 has kept me from buying a gun I like. I'm hoping those days are over.

Well like they say, you can never pay to much for a gun, just pay to soon. Anyway I think a lotta folks bs about what they actually pay for guns. Dealers at gunshops or gunshows know what they've got and aren't going to give them away. Just my opinion.

28-2
agree, the value of a gun is in the eye of the buyer. It depends how much you like it, how long you've been looking for that particular gun, etc.., etc...
And agree on the point about how silly it is to hold off on a gun you like over $25 or $50. Funny, a guy will hold off on a gun over $25, but turn around and blow $70 eating out at a marginal restaurant....

Yeah! And tomorrow, the gun will still be a gun. The food will be transformed to ... well, something pretty darn disgusting!
