Default when did S/N's on cylinders end?

My 50's era Smith has the S/N on the cylinder, as do all the earlier ones. My Smiths from the early 60's on do not. However, I'm not positive if I should generalize based on the sample size of my meager collection. Anyone know anything more regarding when the practice of stamping S/N's on cylinders ended?
