Default IF... They could only bring one back...

...And make it EXACTLY the way they used to with the pinned barrel, the counter bored cylinder (if it applied), the original wood stocks (not laminate or synthetic), everything the way it used to be.... No eight shot cylinders, no red ramps, no white outlines, no MIM, no ILS, they would be just like you stepped back in time and went shopping.

Which one would get the vote???

As an EDIT... I threw in to ignore barrel length. As long as were are just dreaming then include all the options like for the M&P you would include the Model 10 and 12, stainless versions, barrel shapes and lengths, the whole shebang... Since were are dreaming and all...

After obtaining two Pre-War Outdoorsman in the last year, I am completely impressed with the quality and feel of these old timers. They get my vote.

It might cost $10000, but bring back the Registered Magnum (minus the lock)!

Didn't vote. No 44 Special choices.

My choice would have been a 4" M21-5, without the lock and with forged hammer and trigger (can't stand the ringing sound the MIM stuff makes when you dry-fire).

I voted for the Combat Mastepiece. With the rise of gun ownership, how about a well made revolver for the everyday joe?

I voted for the Combat Magnum, since from the list there, that is the one I would most like to see available again. On the other hand, if I could get anything S&W ever made back into production, it would be the I-frame as it reached its pinnacle of development in about 1950 (before it was "improved" with a coil spring action! )

I see all the desire to go to a big, magnum super blaster that will take on the world and assorted aliens from space with a single cylinder full of high performance, hyper expanding, monster destroyers, but the fact of the matter is that a small, easily carried gun on the person beats a big old bulky one left at home.

I'm with the old sheriff who was asked by a reporter who noticed he was carrying his old hog leg at a formal event whether he was expecting trouble. He replied, "No ma'am, if I was expecting trouble, I'dda brought my rifle." That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Given the quality of recent 'reintroductions' I'd hope there will be NONE.

I was one of the few that voted for the M28-2. An every man, no frills built strong, shooter that will handle a wide range of load.

Easy for me, I voted M&P since I didn't see the Model 1917, but that's what my vote is really for.

Here's my write in vote: The model 547

Any of the large Frame, SA or DA, .44 or .45 Top Breaks...

Or, the 2nd Model Hand Ejector in .44-40 and .45 Colt, as they were early on ( such few as there were! ).

Another vote for the Highway Patrolman here. In some ways I find it preferable to the model 27. The narrower trigger was much better for double action work and the matte finish better for field work.

Gotta go along with Dan M and Stophel. The TL, in addition to being an astonishingly fine revolver in its own right, is the direct ancestor of every other N-frame ever made. It needs to be recognized not only for its inherent excellence of design and over-engineering, but for its role as the founder of a dynasty as well.

It was hard to come up with only ten options as that's all I saw the poll would allow. I would have added the Triple Lock, the Heavy Duty, Model 1950 Target, and several more if only I could add more than ten. If any Mod want's to jump in and add some, feel free. I'm just curious what are some of the all time favorites and what seems to be the biggest favorite if one jumps out from the rest.

While I voted K-22 Outdoorsman, I would love to see the K-32 return even as the M-16 32 H&R.

I vote with you on the K-32. Everyone...well most of us, lament the few K-32's we've seen and how high priced they are. Sounds like maybe they went away too soon and the market is ripe again. I think we miss the little rascal because it was cheap to shoot, rather quiet of report and recoil, plus it shot the center out of a target, or the eye out of a squirrel.
10/22.

OK, how about a K-32 in the new .327 Mag and including a factory fitted cylinder and crane assembly in .32-20? Never catalogued or built in the past, but it would be the best of what was with a new cartridge twist! Even on Retirement/Social Security, if this were built like a 4- or 5 screw gun or as an early pinned and recessed 60 series stainless model, I'd find a way to buy one! We could call the stainless version a 616 Classic, use all forgings (no casting or MIM) then put it in a fancy box with old fashioned cleaning kit and SAT and nice smooth combat grips like the last run of M-16s. They'd sell the heck out of it. A man can dream, can't he?

Froggie

PS Having said all the above, I'd still like more than anything else to see the I-frames come back.

I find it interesting the Outdoorsman has so many fans. I like them and I agree with them. I maybe should have not put the Cen and added the HD instead...

Froggie, The quote reference the
'old Sheriff" is attributed to either Texas Ranger Glenn Elliott or Lone Wolf Gonzales,I believe. The comment was made at an after church function; relative to his cocked and locked 1911; and his reply indicated a shotgun rather than a rifle....haven't looked it up but Elliott was a semi-local ranger when I first hit the street and I really want to put the quote to him if memory serves.....which it only does in fits and spurts anymore

My vote would be the registered magnum because that's one of the only S&W's that I want that I don't have.

About a day later now and it's still the Outdoorsman vs. the .357 Magnum. Interesting.

I had seen the quote a long time ago, then it showed up again in a "collection" of "pro-gun" quotes I ran into the other day, and it had morphed into the form I posted. I think I like it better with the shotgun, and either of those worthies you mention would certainly be a great source for it. The sentiment is one we can all share, regardless.

And now the original big boy, the .357 Magnum, makes a big leap to the top. Too bad when they made the new anniversary version they didn't do a real remake. I know I would have given real serious thought to pulling the money from my behind if they had. Judging from this poll, I doubt I'm the only one.

I would love to see a true 5 screw pre war outdoorsman produced, but made with the third Lock, ie: the Tripple Lock!
Neat to see that the RM and the Outdoorsman are the favorite of us S&W collector/shooters, great poll, cheers Dale Z!

Dang,
Who here would not like to see the original quality (1935) .357 brought back.

As to ol' geesers referance to Ranger Glenn Elliott...

Ranger Elliott of Longview, may have been one of the best field Rangers of our time.
I think maybe a toss-up between him and Ranger Howard 'Slick' Alfred of Athens.

Got a pic somewhere of Ranger Glenn Elliott wearing a S&W revolver in a nice lookin rig.
(A newspaper reporter snaped the picture as Elliott and others gather evidence
strown along the hightway after a bank robbery.)

Sorry for the thread drift...

Su Amigo,
Dave

I hear you. My "new" model 21 is already losing it's case hardened color. I had to have the barrel screwed in because the front sight was canted to the left, (I thought it was bent). I replaced it with a .25" gold bead. My GS also recommended changing out the trigger, hammer and MIM. I am contemplating removing the lock and getting The Plug for the hole. No more new revolvers for me. I'm sticking to the old stuff.

OK, this is a little drifty from the original premise, but while we are dreaming... I would go for a Model 60 with pinned 3" barrel, recessed chambers and adjustable sights. What would make it truly special would be the mainspring... it would have the old I-frame spring arrangement so you could get a decent trigger pull easily and the 5th screw in front of the trigger guard for the same reason. Round butt with a set of real wood service grips and a factory grip adaptor would make it easy to hang onto, and of course all non-wood parts would be forged. I wonder if it would sell??

Froggie

PS To amortize the cost of setup, they could make the same gun in a 6 shot .32, and I'd buy both!

Not that I want to drift the thread further away, but are there non- MIM hammers and triggers available from someone? I have seen a trigger in Brownell's, but no hammers so far. My 21's hole is permanently plugged. And my sight looks like it's off to the left... but I do think that this one is bent or the slot is not milled perfectly straight. This is a project gun for me (I'm "oldifying" it as best I can). I dry fired it last night.... it makes a high pitch "chink, chink". Egad, what a cheesy sound! I then picked up a 27-2, which makes a much more satisfying solid "CLACK"

A totally new N Frame Combat Super Magnum Series 2000 in 357 Magnum.

A 5" barreled with full under lug. Trigger job, action work. In blue and nickel. Target hammer, target trigger, target sights, target grips.

Well, let's all dream on:

It would have to be a .44 Special for me. So I'll vote Triple Lock, but with modern steel.

All are excellent choices, but without hesitation I voted for the Combat Magnum. The Quintessential working revolver.

The poll is missing Pre-War Kit Gun.

Dreams never die... or is this a Zombie Thread?? Anyway, since the last time I posted on this thread I've gone through the process of having Project 616 built and can say unequivocally that it would be a worthwhile product for S&W to build, especially if they built it to "Old School" standards. A stainless (or even blue) K-327 would be a real winner if the interest that mine has generated is any indication. Also since this thread was started, Keith44 has custom rebuilt a Registered Magnum as a 44Spl. This is yet another example of things that should have been built by the factory but never were. And the great Wheel of Life continues to turn!

Hi
I am going out on a limb here.
How about the 1950 pre model 26 with the small dia. barrel in 3 barrel lengths and two Calibers. 4 inch 5 inch and 6 1/2 in 45 ACP and 45 colt.
Jim Fisher

This was one of Skeeters favorite guns

Poll is skewed, there isn't a Heavy Duty option on there, so it is invalid!

I would have voted for a 5 inch TL Target in nickel with ivory Magnas but it wasnt there.

The Outdoorsman would be my second choice.

Registered Magnum gets my vote, with all due respect to the HD (Bill) and the 25-2 (Jim).

Sorry about that guys!
