Would a 1951-1952 vintage 2" square butt M&P have flat bottom or the rounded PC stocks? The stocks on this revolver are mis matched, and are flat bottomed. Thanks, Big Larry

Seeing as how everyone here LOVES pictures, I think you really should add some to your Post so we can see the little 'M&P' and it's for-now questionable Stocks..!

I forget when S&W started offering the rounded Bottom ones, but my vague impression is that it was later on sometime...so I will be looking forward to the definitive answer also.

It's my understanding the K-frame PC magnas were introduced sometime in 1952. I have posted my M&P with s/n C226070 and some believe it was one of the earlier ones to have them.

It's also my understanding that either the square-bottom or the rounded PC magnas could be ordered in the early years. I suspect the PC magnas evolved to be the "standard" on fixed sighted models and the square-bottom magnas remained "standard" on the adjustable sighted models.

Let us know the serial number of your M&P and which style you'd like to use . . . one of us is bound to have a spare pair of whatever you're looking for.

Mine is # C 169886, no XXX's. Got it at the last Reno show for $375 as it had mis matched grips, and I am freaky about totally matching S&W's.I could not pass it up for the $$$ though. Thanks, Big Larry

Larry,

I can see why you couldn't pass that one up . . . it's a classic! Even though the numbers don't match, you have a beautiful pairing of magna stocks with your M&P . . . don't believe I'd change a thing!

Larry, I have C2077/6", C46336/5", C84786/2" and C237356/2" RB airweight. They all have square butt magnas except the airweight. C2077's SB magnas were modified by a prior owner be removing the wood below the checking in an attempt to replicate PC magnas. Obviously, I have no idea who or when this was done, but it shows that someone preferred the compactness of the PC style and tried to make a set of their own. All of the above stocks are numbered to their respective guns. Not sure if this helps, but thought that I would share. (Actually gave me an excuse to play with the toys)

PS: What is the number of the mismatched stocks???

PPS: I paid $450 for mine 10 years ago, so I think that you did just fine.

My 2' M&P made in 1948 has the original grips that look like those on Big Larry's M&P pictured above

The serial number on the high horn stocks is # 199540, no XXX's. A little later than the gun. Thanks, Big Larry

While not the original stocks, they are close enough to be period correct. I would say that you did really good with that purchase.

Thanks all. The seller wanted $450 for the gun and I agreed only if the stocks matched, which they didn't, so I offered him $375 and he accepted. I thought I was getting a good deal. I had just bought a minty M&P 5" from 1951 for $350. It was 100% matching. Big Larry

Larry, can you send me a link to the LGS that you go to? I want to buy some S&W's for under $400 too.

The Big Reno Show in Reno. They have a nice show three times a year and there is always something nice and cheap to buy there. Last year I got my "one liner" K22 with the large ejector rod knob there. Sure it was $800, but I got the box, not in the best shape, and a 99% high collectable 22. Also last year, I got a 1931 vintage Winchester M52 with a nickel steel bbl. and special order receiver. Super rare rifle. No one has seen another like it. This year it was 7 S&W's. All nice.
