Moon or half-moon clips? N why?
What is your choice to use and why. I'm newly interested in a Model 1917 US Army .45 acp. and am getting ideas and suggestions from our members. What tool or tools do you use? Thanks...Sprefix

Howdy
Neither. I shoot 45 Auto Rims in my two Brazillian 1917s. No need for clips. As a matter of fact, even with 45 ACP you don't really need the clips. The rounds chamber on the case mouths. All the clips do is allow you to eject the rounds more easily. I think they are such a pain that on the rare occasion that I shoot 45 ACP in mine I poke out the empties with a stick.

Full-moon clips certainly make for fast reloads.
I remember reading that in the old days, people used to solder two half-moon clips together to create a cobbled up full-moon clip.

I don't particularly care for either one. I shoot auto-rims in mine.

This is where I usually step in with a comment that third-moon clips are my favorite. They are easy to load/unload with just your fingers and 50 clipped rounds fit easily into any standard .45 ACP ammo box. Try that with the others!
Here is a photo comparing the three types:

Ranch Products makes and sells them. MidwayUSA has them (see link below).

The only problem is that Midway's shipping / handling charges are "a mite steep".
Below is the home page for Ranch Products. They don't have much of a website but I have ordered from them through the US Mail without problems:
