I hope that I'm posting this in the right place. I just acquired this gun from my father. Don't know the history (if any). Would like to find out all that I can. # on the bottom of handle, cylinder, and bottom of barrel is "C 1400** ". If anyone can tell me about this, I would appreciate it.
Also, where would I find out this information on my own. Dad gave me other guns and I'd like to find out manufacture date and other history on them as well.

Good looking M&P you have there, and it is wearing a very nicely preserved set of early post-war Magna stocks. Wonderful piece to inherit.
The C series was created to serialize the second million guns produced in the K frame M&P line of revolvers. As hivel37 stated, your example comes from the group made between 1948 and 1951. S&W ran out of C numbers in 1967 and began the D series the next year.

Assuming that your serial number is six digits, I would say your gun
was shipped in 1950. I have serial # C121XXX that letters to August
1950. Nice looking gun and being it belonged to your father makes
it even better. As has been stated above get a copy of "The Book".
