What year is this revolver
My wife's uncle( 84 years old )has a s&w revolver that belonged to his dad and he asked me if I could find out anything about it. The ser. no. is 175163 on the barrel it say's its a 45 acp double action thanks.

It is a 1917 revolver. Does it have the US Army markings on the butt? It might have a Brazilian crest on the sideplate.

no it doesn't but it looks like it had a lanyard ring at one time just the hole now.

your revolver may be a model 1917 .45 hand ejector u.s. army. not sure about the date of manufacture

Assuming it is a martial marked Model 1917, then it was most likely made in that year. Does it have the "Ordnance Bomb" and three letter inspectors stamp, smooth walnut stocks, lanyard ring. U.S. Property on the bottom of the barrel, and S34 under an Eagle on the bottom barrel flat?
If it has the commercial finish and checkered stocks with matte silver medallions, no U.S. markings, then it would be as late as 1935 to 1937. There was a Brazilian contract in 1937 that started at SN 181,983. There were few commercial models manufactured between WWI and this 1937 contract.
