Let's see your "I" frames!
The "I" frame guns have long been out of print, but I thought it might be fun (and historically instructive) to put together some photos of those you might have.
This is my only one, a veteran of the bullseye circuit. Today, it's no thing of beauty, but it reflects years of earnest use. This is a 22/32 Hand Ejector, built on the Bekeart pattern. It left the Smith & Wesson factory on March 19, 1917, headed for M.W. Robinson distributors in New York City.
Let's see whatcha got!

Pre-Model 30 1953-1955 Horrible pic, but best I have right now.

I have several. Like tater chips you can't have just one. Beside my 22/32 kit gun which I don't have a picture of on the computer, this one is my favorite a .32 4" in orig nickel.

WELL, HERE WE GO, AGAIN...
Plainly, I'm swimming with the Big fishes when I try to
showcase firearms. What I think are great shots aren't much
compared to what I see here. My consolation is that I can still
drag 'em out into the light of day and feast my eyes on the
originals.
All four of these came from Forum members, which means a LOT to
me. Maybe not Collector grade, except to me.
This .32 H-E has a recurring 3-digit S/N. but that's not why I got it.
The pair of snubbies are a pre-30, and a pre-32(Terrier).
The 1953 KitGun is special to me as well.
If the previous owner's should see and recognize their old guns,
they are all doing well, and treated like the prizes they are.
Thanks for the opportunity to show all the above I-frames. TACC1

This 22/32 shipped in 1925, still shoots great. Love the classic look of these guns.

Here are "Mutt & Jeff." Jeff is a post-War .32 Hand Ejector with 2" barrel... a true post-War I-frame. Mutt is a pre-War .32 Regulation Police that received a 6" post-War barrel as a transplant sometime before he followed me home. They are a true "odd couple" don't you think? Both have all matching numbers (except Mutt's barrel and grips) and although the pictures make them look rougher than they are, will go about 90% +, which is fine for the shooters that they were bought to be. Gotta love those I-frames!!

John,
That's a very unusual rear sight that I've never seen before. Do you have any information about it?

That's been commented on before. I don't know a thing about whether it was a S&W option or an aftermarket device. It fits perfectly into the topstrap slot. It came to me with a wooden sliver wedge forced under it to adjust elevation - the knobs are quite large and control windage. If anyone out there has seen another one and knows what it is, I'd sure be interested.

That's a good question. The engineering change converting all I frames was c. 1960 but I've seen posts of lettered guns shipping as late as '64 IIRC.

I only have one I Frame, this .32 Regulation Police that shipped in January 1924. My Grandfather carried it until he passed away in 1955, and I got it when my Dad passed away in 2003.

I'm pretty sure that it is not a S&W original. If is an aftermarket of some kind, but I am not familiar with it. Also, since the fore-strap of the sight does not sit down flush in the top frame, would be another indication of an aftermarket fitted to your gun. I'll be watching to see if someone can identify the maker of the sight.

This is just one more case of "if that gun could only talk..."
Obviously, somebody thought a lot of it, had it customized to fit his exact desires (whims?) and then carried, used and shot it a whole lot! That is the most interesting thing about it. Beyond that, the sight is so unusual and so very cool, I just wish we could find out more about it.
Regards,
Froggie

Well, here are three of my four I Frames. Which reminds me that I need to get a shot of the blued .32 Regulation Police soon...I've been remiss in getting it posed for a shot.
The nickel RP is a .32 and the blue is a .38 S&W. Not pictured is my blue .32 RP
This Pre-32 Terrier was the first nickel gun I purchased and it started me on nickel guns. Now I have 5 or 6 different nickel guns, onlt took about 50 years to come around!

Great photos! Definitely not a factory sight, but a nice improvement over the original. And a nice collector item in its own right. I hope someone can identify it.

Linda,
I think I'm in love! The Terrier is a cutie, but the holster it's in is the best example of that era I've seen in quite a while. Could we have some more details on it?

Someone 'fixed' the hammer. I need a new one. Also would like to replace the trigger with a non nickeled one.
Anyone have a good hammer and trigger they'll part with?

I have shown these pictures before in other threads, but perhaps there is some merit to showing them together in an I-frame thread. Even though I like larger revolvers and shoot most accurately with N-frames, I am drawn to I-frames just because I like their style and the sense of compact precision that seems built into them.
Here's a Model of 1903 Target that shipped in 1904. Within a year or so S&W had adopted the policy that no serious target revolver should be nickeled, and they committed to blue finish on models like this one.
And here, from the end of the prewar I-frame run, is a .22/32 Target that shipped in 1940. This one has the recessed cylinder that encloses the rims of inserted cartridges.
Here is a very early .32 Regulation Police, which appears to be unfired...
.. and here is an even earlier (S/N 194) .38 RP that has been fired but is not all that beat up when you look at it closely.
Those RPs are from May and April 1917 respectively. The first RPs were shipped in April.
These two uncommon revolvers are early postwar .38 "unimproved" I-frames; both still have strain screws and flat mainsprings. Despite the round butts, these letter as .38 Regulation Police revolvers, which is what you can read on the barrels. There probably aren't more than a few hundred .38 RPs that were made up as round butt guns, but they appear from time to time. There is a sense in which these could be considered long-barrel Terriers. Or .38/32 "Dachshunds," as I think of them.
Both of these round butt RPs shipped in July 1951.
My favorite I-frames remain the prewar .22/32 Kit Guns, which were in production from 1936-1940, and a few of which shipped as late as 1941. Despite limited production, these guns can be found in a wide variety of sight and grip configurations.
The one at bottom right is a "virtual" Kit Gun. It was manufactured as a .22/32 Heavy Frame Target in 1923, but was sent back to the factory for work in 1946. It emerged refinished and sporting a new short barrel and recessed cylinder, both numbered to the frame. In every respect it observes the Kit Gun configuration standard, but the serial number places it far outside the range of original-production Kit Guns. A few other modified HFTs like this one are known to exist.
There are a few other I-frames in the safe that I really like, but these are perhaps the most interesting ones.

Here is the one and only that I have. It is alittle rough but the cost was right. It is a .32 Reg. police neat little gun.
Thanks RB

It's been a couple of weeks now... doesn't anybody have something cool in their safe to drag out and show us? No Regulation Police Targets, no 2" Post Office Models, no other cute little I-frames? Don't keep them hidden away!

Back at post #6, I posted a pick of my only I frame. I said it was a horrible pic, and it was. Allow me to post a better pic of my only I frame. It is an I frame, have letter on it, shipped May 11, 1956. Wrong era grips, but the "pearls" that were on it, have been stored. Hope that answered the questions.

Hard to tell at that angle but the hammer is way too early for a J frame. Although the Magnas are post 1968. Clearly an I frame in post #6 and a 5 screw!

Front sight looks to "new" and of course the grips are to new for an I frame.

You've hit on one of the many little known evolutionary characteristics of the confusing 50's I frames. My earliest I frame #610935 with that sight is actually a .32 "Improved Model" (coil spring) pre-dating the Models of 1953. Top right:

Yes, it's kind of lost the pre war panache.

Gosh guys, I think my Pre-Model 30 looks just like an I frame. The site is not new, the stocks are incorrect, but my dad tossed the originals when he bought it, and it may have lost some of the pre war panache, but I think it looks darn good for a 55 year old shooter grade I frame. If this gun, shipped in 1956, looks like a newer gun, then I guess I have done my job. I must have kept her up pretty good. If you have any questions about this I frame, you can PM me. I would be happy to go over the gun with you guys.
