Default K22 Smith & Wesson. HELP NEEDED!!!!

K22 Smith & Wesson.
Hello to all on the forum, this is my first post so hope you can help me..
If anybody could help me to find out when this gun was manafactured: K22 4inch barrell serial number: 31831 number on frame: 71676 also stamped on crane 71676, also with "T" and "1" ?? Hope this is helpful in identifying the date of manafacture! It is has a round butt 3 screw frame, also if anyone could advise on proper grips for same, would a universal monogrip from round to square suit this model 18.
Hopefully somebody can advise me, I will post picture of same. Thank you!!

Default Serial Number Clarification...

Howdy!

Look for the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame. This is taken as the correct number.

The other numbers marked on the gun mean different things at different times in production, but the most reliable numbers are found there on the bottom of the butt.

Lightbulb 4" K-22... Number "K" 31,831?

Is there a "K" in that serail number sequence? I suspect that it may be well over to the left and away from the numbers.

This would be an early-ish post war K-22 "Masterpiece", probably 1948 or so... and I would guess it began life as a 6" gun as the 4" guns were not not common until someplace well about K100,000.

Here's a couple of mine..

The gun on the right is a factory new 4" K-22 shown with a like condition 6" gun for comparision. Note the front sights. 4" guns usually had a ramp blade.

Some were cut to shorten, or rebarreled later in life to the handier length.

A good clear snapshot would be telling.

It's rare that these fine little guns don't shoot well...

Question Glad to help...

... but I have to admit that the missing "K" in the serial number is a stumper.

The "round butt' description is a little odd too in that these guns were built as square butts.

Is the number also marked on the back of the cylinder and on the underside of the barrel?

I look forward to seeing photos of what you have.

All my best,

Drew

I have not heard of round-butt Model 18s. Could the K have disappeared along with the part of the frame that used to be square-butt?

The K would be on the front end of the butt, not where it would be rounded.

With all the strange facts mentioned, no K prefix to the serial number, 4" too early for the number and rounded butt, I'm convinced you don't have a Model 18. I believe you have a Model of 1953, (pre model 34) .22/32 Kit Gun of 1955 vintage. That would solve all the questions; this model has no letter prefix in the number, they came with 4" barrels and the round butt is common.

Not necessarily true - some of the front is removed, as well, if it is to match a factory RB.

You're correct, but not enough is removed, to remove the K when you compare a RB to SB and see the placement of the K. It it was done that sloppily, round butt stocks would be too large for it and not even fit. I don't think it's a K frame anyway.
