Value of Smith & Wesson Model 18
Need your expertise opinion about this Model 18 that is called very good condition. Priced at $649.00. I realize a new made one today is that price, but this a 4 screw. The color reflection on the lower sides is only a reflextion. Thanks much.

I would say $650 is maybe a little high but not crazy. At $400-450 that 18 would be at home, at $500 -600 it is an okay buy. I would push for a little better price.

I agree its a little high, but not ridiculous. That is nice one.
They're not making anymore of them like that, so if you really want it I wouldn't let fifty bucks stand in the way.
If you're buying it to flip for a profit, you'll have to hold on to it for a while.

It sounds a little high to me. If the grips don't number to the gun, then I think it's too high.
Good Luck,

If this is an 18-No Dash....
Jump on it. Tough gun to find. There's just something very special about those guns in the K275,000-K325,000 range.

LOL, for the same price anyone that chooses the new one over a 4 screw model 18 is insane. Not the greatest price but a year from now do you think you'll care? BUY IT

Looks to be real clean, and a 4 screw version is old - which to me is more desirable. Price is acceptable for what I can see from your photo ........assuming all fit, finish and functioning is correct.
I have always been willing to spend a few dollars more to get a pristine version of exactingly what I want. I like to have a gun with scratches and dents that I put in (not someone else s), and a few bucks isn't going to make me either richer or poorer.

Here is my little story;
i was at West Palm bch. show and a man was walking around a 18-2
with the box and papers. He was the original owner bought it in 1966 new.
He was asking $500. firm and every dealer was trying to beat him up
over $50.
Even my friend who collects K-22s said he would pay $400. -$450.
I walked the man back to my table and gave him $500. and now the
model 18 is my new shooter. I see these so infrequently
,when one comes along in high condition I cannot say no.
The 18 no dash with diamond magnas numbered to the gun
is reasonable at $600. cash. if you have tax and call in at a dealer
it drives the price some.
The gun pictured looks very clean with no bumps on the grips.
This is a good thing.
REMEMBER,,PRICES ARE SET ASSUMING THAT THE GUN IS IN %100
MECHANICAL CONDITION.
ALWAYS inspect a K-22 thoroughly for any mechanical defects.
"A gun that don't shoot aint' nothin but a fancy paperweight."
The one thing to look for when inspecting a K-22 is on the
face of the cylinder between the chambers,,
if the gun has been fired rapidly, or, dry fired you may observe
some dimples in the face of the cylinder where the firing pin
has struck out of time.
This observed , to me, removes about $100. from the value.
And seems to be more common the older the K-22 is.
Inspect in person, and take $500. cash in one pocket.
Keep the other $100. in the other pocket.
If it is an internet sale, do not buy it without an inspection period.
The firing pin may be broken or it may be out of time.
Better to send it back and pay return shipping than to be stuck with a
broken gun.
Hope this helps.

There are so many variables that can sway me one way or another,
Mostly its condition and my mood at that moment.
A few years ago any clean Model 18 got me excited,
Now it would have to be a super clean 4 or 5 screw with a box n docs and original diamond grips to get me to dig that deep.
There are some gems out there but how bad do you want one right now and do you have enough disposable cash laying around.

All of us can remember "one I should have bought". If you don't want this one to be your "one I should have bought", just remember this little axiom:
You'll regret paying a little too much for a couple of days at the most, but you'll remember it as 'one I should have bought" for a lifetime!
The way prices go up, we don't pay too much, we just buy them a little early sometimes.

If I were to sell my 4 screw K22 CM someone would have to start by making $600.00 plus offers to keep me from laughing at them. And no , it's not for sale. SN. K315xxx, not model marked.

I agree that the price is at the top of the range but a really clean model 18 from that time period are very difficult to locate so I'd buy it if I were you.

I purchased an 18-0 a couple months ago for $500, my offer. He may have taken less, but there is a story in there I won't go into. He was the original owner and it came with box and tools, no paper. Shot very little, it was in my estimation 95+%. I talked to several people and was given the impression, even by a S&W rep, that I did well on this gun. So, if I were you, I would let my heart run the sale, like previously stated, if you like and want it, buy it. It will only go up in value with time. Great gun, it is my favorite shooter. I don't carry it in a holster and take very good care when it's out of the safe. Good luck in your decision.

Wow all the responses are making me feel stupid. I just paid 625 for a K-22 5 screw that was in as good of shape as the one you are looking at. It was in the 218XXX range for a serial number. It had all matching numbers with diamond grips. It shoots wonderfully! On second thought I don't feel stupid. Thats how fast it will go away. Buy it !

Ask yourself, "When was the last time you saw a Model 18 for sale"? Then ask, "Do I want one"? Then pay the man his price.

Not a big fan of numbered model Smiths, I picked this K22 Combat Masterpiece up at the Reno show a couple years back. It was in a glass case. $400 out the door. # K 162068, no XXX's, was shipped 12-1952. Too bad it does not shoot as well as my M617 no dash 4". Big Larry

Many Hoarders here in Arizona. Especially along the Colorado river. Even a couple on the Gila river as well.

Sorry to hear it don't shoot well Larry. Tell you what,I'll give you $500 for it so you don't lose anything on it. That's a 25% profit. Better than the stock market!

Hey Fat Tom. Guns sits in a pouch in the safe and the holster I had specially made for it fits my new M617 no dash 4" perfectly and that M617 shoots real well. My very scarce Ruger KS-4 Super Single Six shoots way better than the CM 22 as well. Just one of those things. I will never sell the CM 22 unless I upgrade it at some point. Big Larry

Model 18-3 / Box / Papers / $750 (local ad)
Quote:
Model 18 Combat Masterpiece 22lr in 2 piece riveted box with paperwork. 4 inch pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, adjustable sights factory walnut grips. Gun and box in 98 percent condition. For sale or possible trade, pics available on request. This is a very collectible Smith and would be a nice addition to a collector.
|
Local ad (in western KY) It is an 18-3 and the seller is asking $750.
I have dealt with the seller in the past and found him honest and fair.
Posting for informational value only. I have no financial interest in this item. I don't have the $750 either.

buy the 18!
ealier this spring i spotted an 18 in a local gunshop. owner wanted $630 plus tax. the original owner had brought this gun and a winchester rifle he had bought in the same year (1958).
I loved the gun but thought the price was too high. I left and came back 2 weeks later (45 mile round trip) and was glad to see it still there. I believe the only reason it was still there was because it was a shop that specialized in modern slide guns, not old wheel guns. I got him to give it to me for $625 out the door but would have gladly paid the full price.
if you want it, buy it! five years from now it is an $800+ gun.

That's sort of the way I was. I wanted one, and fully expected to pay 600-650 or so based on what I'd seen online. I had never actually seen one in person that I knew of.
My wife and I were on vacation in Illinois back in June, and I saw that someone had posted on this forum that my favorite gun store had one in their case. I called and got them to hold it for me, sight unseen. I told them I'd be home in a day or two.
When I got there I found that not only was it in great shape it was a 1953 Combat Masterpiece, five screw. They were asking $499.00. Trying to be cool, I offered $450.00. They replied they couldn't take less than $460.00. "Well, I guess I won't lose it over $10.00." I replied.

What do you find better about these guns than the earlier ones?
My 1955 with TT & TH... $300 back in February, part of a multi-gun deal.

A gentlman was wanting $650 for this CM (1953). That price was a little too steep for me. Luckily he preferred to trade so I gave him a LNIB 4" 28-2 for it.

I've told this story here before, but several years ago I bought a 5 screw pre 18 S/N in the 198,xxx range, for around $275 (IIRC), when I got home I had just walked in the door when the dealer was calling wanting to buy it back from me.
It lives in my safe now and keeps the 4 screw pre 17 company.
BTW - did not mean to be rude, that is a really fine example of a Combat Masterpiece, you will quickly come to love the way it carries and shoots, one of the most comfortable and accurate revolvers you'll find. Enjoy it!

I have been kinda-sorta looking for one of these as well as a 17 and would prefer a 4 or 5 screw version of each.
As has been stated, it's not a "buy it, that's a smokin' deal" price, but it's not too bad, in my opinion.
Might I suggest you offer $600 cash? If the seller won't budge, ante-up and take it home. As many here have stated, all you have to do is look at the past to see the value of this type of gun is not going down anytime soon.
And if I may also add/suggest, if you decide not to buy it, post the sellers contact info here (assuming they are ok with you doing so) and I'm sure one of us would be happy to have it.
Regards,
tp

I always lusted over the 18's but he prices were always too high. Finally about 3 yeas ago found one.LNIB 18-3 from '78.Box,papers,tools for $370 at a gunshow. What a steal!!!
Two months later found a 5 screw from '54.about 98%,diamond magnas and all for $400.had too have this one too.
All the years waiting for the right deal finally came to pass.
The newest one is still unfired. Can't louse as a investment. The 5 screw
is just great! and fun shooter. Both or either were well worth the wait.

Thanks to all for the positive remarks about the revolver. Tried $600.00 but NG, so big deal for another $50.00. Got the gun and though it was called very good I would rate it border-line excellent. Only wear is slight at the muzzle from a holster. Bore and cylinders perfect. Grips number to the gun and assembly number the same on grip frame and yoke. And there is no model number or serial on the yoke. Just the serial on bottom of frame which I presume makes it early 1957. Think I did OK.

Welcome to the Forum!
If the gun and box label are marked Model 18, the gun is not from 1955. My guess is you got that date (April 15, 1955) from the inside bottom of the box. That date applies to the liability and warranty statements printed in the box. It does not apply to the gun. These statements and the date remained in S&W boxes well into the Bangor Punta era of the 1960s and 1970s. I have several boxes marked Bangor Punta that have this printing in them.
If you post the serial number, someone can give you an estimated shipping year for your revolver.
The .22 Combat Masterpiece is a wonderful little gun. I'm sure you will get lots of affirmation of this from other posters.
Congratulations on owning a wonderful revolver.

i just brought a pre-18 5 screw 1954 vintage home today. it is all numbers matching and other than a turn line and some muzzle wear, is in excellent condition. it came with the k32 masterpeice box shown which is in pretty good condition. i paid $650 OTD which some would say is high, but i won't miss the extra money. and the way the pop cans were jumping at 40 yards off the bench, i'm thinking it is a real shooter. it is a real sweet gun and my other smiths are going to be spending a bit more time in the safe for a while.

I'm a little late for the most active part of the conversation, but I'd say the quoted price for the described gun is just fine. To put things in perspective I just bought a 98% 5-screw Pre-18 (K247xxx) with box, SAT and a couple of sets of custom stocks. The package obviously cost more than for a single gun, but backing out the extras I would put the price of the gun at about $650-700. I couldn't be happier.
In my experience, if you take a Pre-17 and a Pre-18 of the same era and of comparable condition, the Pre-18 will bring at least $50 more than the Pre-17. But then how often do you get to see a Pre-18 of any condition? Pre-17s and early 17s are all over the place by comparison.
I completely support the theory that if you desperately want a first-decade .22 CM and see one, you say, "I'll take it," and then check the price tag.

That's about the last S&W I want and would have paid that in a heartbeat for the gun only. I've never seen one down here and that's not for lack of looking.
You did well.

I think the price is fine, considering how much demand there is for this model, how much they have gone up in the past few years, and how rarely nice ones seem to become available. I don't see them as often as pre-M17s. I just traded a M27-2 in presentation box (which I valued at $895) for this K-22 with diamond targets from about 1954 and $200. Considering that I was into the M27-2 for about $750, I paid $550 for the K-22, which I thought was a deal. Besides, as someone pointed out to me: There are a lot fewer 4-screws than 5-screws.

That's a fine looking gun, RBrem. I'd put some Renaissance wax on the stocks. That would really bring them to life. I use a real soft tooth brush to get it down in the checkering.

Hello everyone. Just joined and have enjoyed reading your comments. I have a fairly prestine S & W Model 18 with Cert. Letter and holster. Left factory June 1959 and has been in my family over 50 years. Never shot until about 10 years ago when I heard the dog barking. Looked out and he thought he was a mongoose making circles around a ratterler. That was the first time the gun was shot and since then maybe a box of shells. I have reached an age of hand tremors and cataracts and really think it would spoil my day to shoot myself in the foot. It needs a good home but haven't any idea what tag to put on it. I have seen the comments and seems the range is $600 to over $895. Feel free to make any comments and thanks for your help.

My 6" k-22 is a 4-screw shipped the month of my birth, and I'd love to find a 4" 4-screw to go with it. I'm not expecting to find one for less than $800 in decent condition in this part of the country.

Welcome to the Forum!
Just one question. Where do you live? A mongoose? Saw lots of those in SE Asia during the war, but never saw one here in the World!
Just curious.
Jack
Added: Just reread your post. I see. The dog thought he was a mongoose. That makes a whole lot more sense! I'm embarrassed. Sorry.
I guess we can add my eyes to the shaky category, along with your hands, right?
