Shooting the Frankensmith 1917
Some of you may recall the parts gun 1917 I put together. I had bought a commercial 1917 frame while I was in Afghanistan.
This frame was stripped to just the sideplate and barrel. A prior owner had stripped all of the finish as well. I had most of the parts squirreled away. It took a while to get everything to mesh, but I finally got it to function.
Anyway, other than standing on the back steps and shooting into the stream bank, I really hadn't shot it. Since the weather was still warm and my annual qualifications are coming up soon, I went out and shot the Glock 9mm. Of course, I tossed a couple of revolvers in the truck as well.
I drove out to the back pasture and set up my target frame. After shooting my qual, I broke out the 1917. Since this is my kitchen defense gun, I decided to shoot it at 7 yards. Besides, I had replaced some barbed wire earlier in the day and the old man was feeling a bit tired.
This target was fired single action. I'm sure Brother Burt (tennexplorer) could do better, 'cause he has always been a better shot than me. But considering the skinny front sight and the narrow rear sight notch, I'm OK with the five shot group. Ammo was aluminum cased Blazer 230 grain RNFMJ.
Of course, I can remember being able to shoot groups like this 15 and 25 yards, double action, but the eyes and muscles were a lot younger back then.

Couldn't ask for more from a seven-yard gun.
My bedroom desk gun is a Brazilian that I had to feed some new pieces before it would function smoothly. Now it's accurate at home invasion distances, which is pretty much what it's for. Other than noisy entertainment at the range every few months, that is.

My kitchen defense gun is also a 1917. I think they are pretty good guns. Larry

Those were made by Forum member Kurac. They are walnut and have a "Coke" profile. None better, IMHO.

Nice looking gun!!! I need to get some proper shoes for my 1917. I might have to look into Kurac's assortment, don't remember if he makes anything in the original style for 1917s, would like to have some original ones as well.

Sorry to be late chiming in. I saw this gun when it was in pieces and they were really rough pieces. Gil has done a really good job in getting it to work. We need to send him all our projects. Give him something to do during the long, cold mountain winter.

He does, or did, make original style 1917 grips. As a matter of fact, I may have a pair that he made that I'm not using.
Drop me a PM.

Gee, thanks, Burt. What did I do to YOU????

What a great project gun! Looks like I'll knock loudly before I barge into your kitchen. I agree with you about Kurac's grips. I have a pair on my 3.5" Model 27 that I just love. Thanks for the great post and pics,
Jerry

Great group even for a youngster.
I want my anti-home invasion tools to be a straight razor and a flame thrower.

I dug around and found a "before" shot of the two stripped frames. The 1917 on the right is the revolver seen in this post. The one on the left is together now, but the action has a "catch" in it that I haven't worked out yet.

Actually, he had worked on it a little by the time he made these. When I saw it, it looked like a boat anchor. Y'all please notice there is nothing on that gun; everything got refitted.
Gil, now it's time to practice you blueing skills.

Very Impressed
Muley Gil, that's a fine looking gun, and I'm glad that all
the pieces went together right. I'm a big fan of old stuff made new
again, functionally. A fine job you've done, and thanks for
sharing. TACC1
