Pawnshop Rescue - Pictures Attached
Well, I was visiting my LPS today and spotted a poorly stored K38 6 inch sitting on a lower shelf. Closer inspection showed her to be a 5 screw, with the S/N of K367xx. Blueing is about 80%, but it doesn't look like it was ever fired! Bright shiney bore, absolutely no carbon over the forcing cone, and lockup tighter than any of the brand new Smith's I've seen. They were asking 4 bills, which I thought was high given the finish. I dickered with the clerk a bit and got him down to 340 out the door. I just couldn't stand to see the old girl sitting there amongst a bunch of Glocks. She's got a bit of rust, and will take some cleaning up. I'll post pics after she comes home. Edit; See my last post

Nice job! It sure never hurts to haggle a bit. It's nice to know there are deals to be had in our neck of the woods. Can't wait to see the pics.

While I think a Glock 17 is a great combat handgun, for a 9mm, I was "forced" to carry and use one for several years, I would agree it is a travesty to have a S&W K 38 on the same shelf as a Glock...

If it's a 80% K38 revolver it's a little over priced at $400 in my opinion even with tight lockup.

A10, I notice you live in Auburn. Was that K-38 you bought at Ben's Loans in Renton? If so, I looked at that one a few months ago and I thought it looked pretty decent.
I'm glad it ended up in a good home, if it is the one I am thinking of.

Nuts - yep the one at Bens. The grips are in great shape and numered y
to the gun. 1948 vintage. I can't recall exactly but I think it was the tapered barrel, possibly the narrow rib, and a patridge front sight. They started at $399 and I offered $325,we settled on $340. It might still have been a tad high, but not too much. She should clean up well. They have a 10-5 6" safe queen there for $399 as well, but it didn't "speak" to me. This is my first K frame.

A10, please post pictures of the pistol when it is cleaned up.
Since I remember what it looked like in the store, I really want to see what it will look like cleaned up!

I will do a before and after set of pics, I don't think it's going to take much to get it looking good. Hopefully I will be picking it up today.

Home at last!
I picked the K38 up last night and have only had a chance to get a couple cell phone pics. They are not a bad representation of the starting point. As you can see, there is a bit of work to do!

A10, so what if she has a few warts. That gun will last you a lifetime and you can't wear it out with target load wadcutters. She will clean up and be a great shooter, one you won't mind taking to the range and burning powder. It appears to be a tapered barrel, narrow rib. Being a little light in the barrel, you will find she will probably be unforgiving if you aren't doing you part in putting the shot downrange. I think the heavy barrel "hangs" a little better and is not so finicky on the follow through when the shot breaks. In any case, you're gonna like her. Pretty is as pretty does.
Enjoy
Bob

50, those warts were part of what attracted me to her. She's a fine firearm, one I'm not afraid to use and leave my marks on. I plan on teaching my grandkids the finer points of double action revolvers, and after I clean her up a bit she will be more than up to the task. And yes, both the tapered barrel and rib. I'll be looking for a similar K22 next....

I love the K-38. I picked up a 4-screw Heavy Target Masterpiece in a local pawnshop last December. Nobody wanted it. Just a "big old 38" was how it was described. I knew what they had though.Tremendous shooter. One of my favorites. Congrats and good for you. I have a couple rescue revolvers.I'll never get rid of them because they won't bring that much anyway, but I'm just fond of them. And they're reliable.

I love that old gun, I think you're fine at $340, heck the thrill of actually finding it is worth 40 bucks, so you're only in it for $300....and just think you coulda found one just like it on GB and paid $600.

There's nothing wrong with that gun that some Fine grade bronze wool and a little Break-free won't fix. Then, as you say, the next order of business will be to find a K-22 of similar vintage.

I'm looking forward to the finished product. I've soaked it with Kroil and let it set a bit, then worked on it with both some copper wool and a soft cloth. It's coming along....

Haven't had a chance to get her out to the range yet what with the holidays and "other stuff" going on. I'll get some "after" pictures up in a week or so....

If you haven't started yet, I would recommend a soak in Corrosion X. Remove grips and saturate a rag with Corrosion X and wipe the gun thoroughly and let stand for a day, then wipe off with a paper towel. Depending on results repeat again a couple times. Stubborn rust can be attacked by bronze wool and most any good oil such as break free or corrosion X.

Well, for those that hadn't seen, I ended up doing some trading, and am actually pretty happy with how things turned out:
