HELP with some grips: bone or stag?
these came on an old gun i bought some time back and haven't decided whether they are jigged bone or stag? i've never had another pair like them. thanks in advance. Lee

Hi Lee,
Definitely genuine India Sambar Stag antler bone of the best quality. They're old and hand worn/burnished after years of use, and not jigged bone.

not 100% sure but i think they are stag. i have a set of bones and their pattern is much more uniform. my stags are by BMM. site wont let me upload right hand bone grips and of course that side is much more uniform than the left. either way i like em and am always on the lookout for more.

My vote is Sambar. All of the jigged bones that I have seen has more or less linear carving. Yours have 'popcorn' at the base, and I haven't seen any jigged bone that could duplicate that look.

I don't mean to disparage you very nice set of grips, the white pair appear to be elk antler rather than stag (even though often labeled Elk Stag, which doesn't exist).
The dead giveaway is the porosity shown on both sides next to the fore strap, and the very white coloring.

I like antler and have it on several of my revolvers.

I believe they are definitely Sambar. They have some nice colorization from use and appear quite dense on the back side.

YUP ! ...Gorgeous Indian Sambar. That's what I love to find on a gun for sale where they are NOT priced into the gun -- sometimes you can get a free or really cheap gun. This old Brazilian .45 acp came from Gunbroker with a very nice pair like yours (cheaper elk antler on it now) -- FREE GUN !
You didn't ask but.....what are they worth ? I would put $275 - $350 on them assuming the fit to the frame is good and the thickness and shape provide a comfortable hold. The sides are well matched with very nice "bark" character . They are HIGH END SAMBAR !
