Flat Latch Model 17?
Has anyone ever seen a flat latch on a S&W model 17 before as shown in the picture? The seller thinks it is a 17-3.

No, because that's not a Model 17 which is a K frame .22 LR. The photo is of a Pre Mod 35, I frame 22/32 Target Model. With a 4" barrel it's a Kit Gun, pre model 34.
May I ask what they're asking for it?

Jim nailed it! They generally bring more than a Model 17.

I agree it's a 6" barrel Model of 1953 (pre-model 35). Russ

If I'm not mistaken, this is a "J" frame, given the egg shaped trigger guard and longer cylinder. Please excuse if I'm wrong.

He was referring to the model 17 as a K frame.......the pre 35 is on the I frame, before the J frame.

This is one of the more confusing issues with I frames. The Model of 1953 is when the I frames came out with the egg shaped trigger guard and J frame length grip but the frame didn't become J frame size until 1961.
This is a comparison of an "Improved I-Frame" Kit Gun Model of 1953, and a modern "J-Frame" Model 63 Kit Gun. Note the differences in frame length in front of the trigger guard and cylinder length.

It's a pre model 35!
Just but it! They don't come up nearly as often as any K frame .22 One of the hardest S&W's in .22 there is to find (4" kit gun even more so) I've found only 2, bought 30 years apart. Pre mod 35's and the later 35 itself are GREAT shooters, very accurate.

"Just but it!" Do you mean you just bought it?

Jim,
Thank you very much! I didn't know that tid-bit, and I appreciate the education. I thought all the "I" frame revolvers had the shorter trigger guard and smaller grip frame.
For example, here is a post-WW2 "pre-Mod 32" which I believe to be the improved "I" frame (no strain screw).
(borrowed photo; not my gun)
I thought the next step from here was the "J" frame. You have corrected me with this new bit of knowledge. Very interesting. But also somewhat disturbing to me, because I had thought the easy identification feature distinguishing the "J" frame from the "I" frame was the egg shaped trigger guard. Now I find that's not true in every instance.

I just went over the entire thread again and realize one reason I was confused was because of the square butt.
Obviously I have more to learn about "I" frames.
Again thanks!

That style sq bt started on the I frames with the models of 1953. Although it was standard on the pre 35s, there aren't that many on the Kit Gun until the '60s.

I break them down like this so I can keep them straight in my forgetful mind:
1. Transitionals
------- Pre war/post war (has pre war parts)
------- Pure post war including the 1957 issue of .32 Regulation Police Targets
------- Post war Improved (has coil hammer spring)
2. Model of 1953 I Frames; the Pre-Model numbered; 4 screw & 3 screw models
3. 1957 Model numbered guns
4. 1961 I frames became J frames .
