Fair price for a K-22
At a LGS today I looked at a K-22 that was on consignment priced at $775.00. Very good shape 5 screw, matching #s with a few small specks on the cyl. Serial # K 14xx and came with the box , but no sight tool. Grips were not original which is what bothers me.How much would a set of period correct grips cost approx. ? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

what is meant by "not correct"?? even if you find a pair that are proper for the vintage , which would cost at least $100 for NICE ones,( more from what we've been seeing...) they still will not be "correct", as the 'correct' ones would have been numbered to that gun.............still sounds like a nice "package", hopefully the sight adjustment tool was in the box...........

I'm just going to guess at the condition as you describe it (we all rate guns differently). I'd say the gun in the box is probably worth what they're asking, give or take. Its easy to say bargain him down, and if you have that skill, its fine.
If the gun is less than perfect, then you don't need to be quite as sensitive about the grips you find. Its often possible to recoup a big portion of the expense of the new ones by selling the old. Early 1947 guns are pretty sought after. If its really a K1400s gun, then its a goodie. Should have the large ejector knob and one line address. A couple of years ago these guns were selling at half what they bring today.
If you don't have one, don't let the opportunity pass. There aren't even enough of them for all of us here to own just one. Some of us own more than one already.

You won't lose any money on that one. Easy for me to spend someone else's money, but I'd say buy it.

Thats about the price the gun would go for around here. They are hard to find and have really gone up.

buy it.
in replacing the stocks, you will need to find high shoulder magnas. If you don't know what the high shoulders look like, do a search. They will be harder to find and more expensive for a nice set.
buy it.

It seems to be easy for some folks to spend other people's money.
Also it's reassuring to those of us who own several S&W revolvers to
see the high prices that they often sell for today compared to just a
few years ago. I would say that gun is 200.00-300.00 dollars too high
but most on here will disagree.

To my recollection, they have never been as frequently encountered as many other contemporary models. I think we're seeing more of them for sale today because the prices are steep and sellers are seizing the opportunity to capitalize on that significant profit. Apparently, there is no limit to what one fellow will pay for something he truly must have.
Based upon your description of the revolver, I believe it is in line with todays values. Personally, I don't think it's worth it. It's just an old .22 afterall. LMAO!
Cheers;
Lefty

If it was me, I would be prepared to buy the gun (but I would still try and negotiate a better deal). As Dick said earlier, the early 1947 models are not the easiest to find.

Well, they're not the hardest to find either... The 1940 guns are harder and cost a whole bunch more, like 10 times the quoted figure. And the 50 guns shipped in late 1946 are near impossible to locate (unless you spend your time rooting around in old chicken coops. ) Then come the 1947 guns. So its not really true, Drew is sitting on his K117, so its easy to find. He hasn't quoted a price, but only because he'd be afraid someone would grab it.
I'm going to guess that those who feel its a little overpriced haven't got one, or if they do, they wouldn't get off it for $775.
If we keep talking about it, GF will get out of bed and tell us what the 3 digit gun behind David Carrolls table was priced. (after all, its past the crack of noon and he hasn't responded yet.)

I went to the gun shop this morning and made an offer on the K-22 with my concern about the stocks. When phoned, the owner said he thought he had them. As I was pulling out of the gun shop, the salesman came out the door and told me he would bring them over. I got a call about an hour later and brought the gun home this afternoon. A good day when that happens. Also met forum member Pineappleshooter . Thanks to all for reply's and advice. Very helpful.

Nice find. You're snapping up all the good ones in our area. I'd have been posting those pictures if I saw that one.
Congrats!!

Also in the box was this booklet and a factory letter from 1977 for another gun. On page 1 of the booklet the heading is "YOUR CELLAR" The Ideal Place to learn to shoot.

You are the only one who would have half a chance Dick. I keep my promises...
You know, if you got out from under that fat cat and blanket we could go chickencoop and saw mill diving togeather. Ice is out soon and we won't have anyplace to land the Piper Cub so you better hurry. ...
BTW, who DOESN'T shoot in their cellar?

Burg I think K 997 was $1200 and I left it there.
It didn't meet my high condition standards.

I was in the LGS when wetdog picked up the K22 - I got to fondle and drool over it (thanks wetdog). Puts my LNIB 17-4 to shame!
