Pre-War 38-44 Super Police
This came in the mail today.Serial number 4518x.Stamped on the handle Pol. Dept. Lombard ILL. The old hd has a great action and lockup. It also shoots straight,I shot up the box it shipped in. It has a old refinish,A refinish that was well done.Since being refinished it has been used in duty with holster and handle wear. Why the early grips were put on it,Who knows! This will match up perfect with my David Keith custom austin style holster. Now all I need from Dave is a 38 ammo pouch.

A great old hand cannon. There's a lot of good shooting left in that one.
The service grips are from the decade prior to the HD production -- no medallions, so from the 1920s. Do they have a serial number marked on the inside? If they are marked, maybe you can figure out what model they originally shipped on.
I had not heard of any revolvers marked with the Lombard P.D. identity, let alone a Heavy Duty. I wonder if this was a single-gun purchase or if there are other such guns out there.

David,There is no serial number on the grips.I don't think they were a original matched set.The right grip is worn much more than the left. The checkering does not match between the two.Do you recall The postwar 4 screw k-22 with pre-war gold recessed grips I picked up a few months ago? Why do people do these things is beyond me! DSC_0015.jpg

Very neat item. Congratulations. Probably good to go with what I call .38 MiniMags - heavier 38s if you wanted.
I have something similar, but shinier - somebody marked it up with 'Austin PD' and refinished it a couple times, I believe.
Great old guns.
Regards,
Dyson

Neat gun. IIRC, my grandmother's second husband who worked on the Wheaton IL PD carried one of those 38/44s. He passed back in the 50s so my recollections are dim.

Great old gun. Guessing about their past is worth half the price. Hearing them bark makes up the rest.

Lowhog,
Glad to finally see it-it looks very nice! As for grips, yours would have been shipped with silver medallion service grips. I'm sure you will enjoy it for a long time to come!
Thanks for sharing!
Bill
