Default Model 1904, 4th with Heiser Holster Score

A model 1905, 4th change (301068) popped up on a local gun board yesterday. Price wanted was $368, holster included. Poor picture. On close look the holster looked like it deserved more info. I emailed the seller, asked for more photos, some specific questions about the gun and any manufacturer markings on the holster. Yup it was a HH Heiser. My offer of $300 was refused (had to try) and we quickly settled on $350. Two questions about the gun. 1) The 3rd edition of Supica/Nahas says 4th change models with service sights in square butt are rare - is this correct? There are no S&W logos or Made in USA markings - is this typical?

Picture is sellers from add - sorry for poor framing.

Square butt M&Ps are not at all rare, they are by far the most common configuration in 4th Change guns. The "Rare" remark in SCSW3 is deleted in the published Errata. Purely a mistake by whoever wrote the copy.

That SN range falls in ca. 1918-1929 when a lack of the roll-marked S&W logo is quite common. It relates to WWI production requiremenys of the Model 1917.

Here is the Errata list:

Typos, errata & other minor corrections to
"The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson", 3rd Edition, by Jim Supica & Richard Nahas

List compiled by Richard Nahas. Thanks to members of Smith-WessonForum.com for their input!

Corrections to Standard Cat of S&W 3rd Edition.

Nice gun. EXCELLENT holster. That alone is worth $150 or more. You did great on that buy!

I bought it from a kid (relative to my age anyway). He got it from a friend whose g-father had supposedly used it for cowboy action. Seller didn't have a clue about the holster. I ran after this one! Now I've got an itch for holsters. I seem to lug a whole library with me to the LGS's.

Hate to tell you,but if that itch gets really bad,it can cost you more than you've been spending on guns. Better nip it in the bud,as Barney would say.

I've got a gun just like that one... But I sure don't have a holster for it like that. You really scored, especially if that holster is about the same vintage as the gun.

Nice outfit. Heiser's ads used to state "No man ever lived long enough to wear out a Heiser Holster".
