Model 1917 is it worth the price?
I was at the local gun shop today and stumbled across a 1917 45. The surface had small specs of rust all over the finish (freckling) and the grips were incorrect. Magnas that were cracked and glued. It is stamped US property and has the lanyard loop, the action seems to be tight. It has a 5 digit serial number on the butt 20xxx. The price is 675.00. Good or too much money? Does anyone know when it was made? Thanks!

I seem to remember all of the actual 1917s were 1917-18. Don't know what area or the country you are in but prices are all over the place. They are dependant on where and who you are trying to buy it from. The rust may or may not be a deal breaker. That would depend on if it will respond to the normal light rubbing with oil and steelwool.

$675 sounds like too much, to me, for what is at the best a shooter. It would be about a $400 in most locals. Ed.

Here is a website that gives date of manufacture for various military arms, including S&W Model of 1917s:
U.S. Military Dates of Manufacture
Agree that $400 sounds a mite low. Maybe offer that much and see what they say?
What with the mismatched and poorly repaired stocks, plus the presence of rust, I agree that $675 sounds high. However, someone may buy it for that. I would think that $550 or $600 at most would be more like it. If all original and in top condition, these go for well over $1,000. So you decide how much you want one and / or how long you are willing to wait for something better.

All depends on how much you want one and what $675 means to you. Might be a bit high if your looking at it as an investment. If yer in no itching hurry to own one , ya might just wait till a better deal comes along.

Incorrect grips and rust freckling would make it too high at $675 to me, but I doubt if you would find any shooter grade 1917 for less than $500.
