It's a stopper for me... at least it can stop by my place any time and stay as long as it likes! I'm not a big fan of nickel most of the time, but it completes the package quite nicely in your case. If I were you, I'd be looking forward to Bar-B-Que Season!

It was definitely sent back in December of 1958. There are only 5 known 5 screw 6 1/2" 44 Magnums. You would have to invest in a factory letter if you think it's real.

Here is a re-nickel mark on a 1st model of 1899, that went back to the factory in April 81.
As you can see there is a large R-N stamp indicating a re-nickel. If this is typical, yours may be original, though I agree a factory letter is warranted.

The "O" represents that the gun was reworked at the "outside" service department which I understand to be still at the factory but not within the same service department that works on factory new guns that have yet to ship.

Is there an N on the rear cylinder face? Would indicate factory finish.

Outstanding find for sure.
It's possible your gun shipped earlier than you think. There were a number of 44 magnums in your serial range that shipped in the 1st half of 1956. I have S166320 which shipped in May 1956. Also...assuming the case is original to the gun, it has the earlier button latch which (per Doc44's info in Expert Commentary) puts it earlier in 1956.
I'd get a letter on that one for sure. Congratulations!
Craig...

Did you mean 5 NICKEL 5 screw 6 1/2" 44 Magnums?

Leaving out 1 word can certainly change the meaning! Yes, that's what I intended to say.

I don't know about the 0, but 5-screw 44 Magnums with an original nickel finish have an N stamped on the lower left hand corner of the grip frame and in the ejector rod shroud. The revolver you have was most likely shipped with a bright blue finish in July-August 1956 and returned to S&W in 1958 for a change of finish to nickel. I have seen your 44 Magnum a couple of times at the show in Tulsa and it is a very nice one. I know you will enjoy owning it.
Currently, there are five known 5-screw 44 Magnums with an original factory nickel finish and about as many with a change of finish to nickel.

You guys are great. Thanks for all the input and info. Today at the National gun day show in Louisville I was able to pick up some tools to add to the set. There were no other N or B markings on the frame. Even found this test target under the interior lining which suggest it was a 1956 gun.

Is the case numbered to the revolver on the bottom in white grease pencil?

Bill, Yes it is. It is located on the bottom, far left hand side. Why do you ask?

I was just curious if the case was original to your revolver. I am glad that it is. S&W numbered cases to the revolver up through October/November 1956 and discontinued this practice when they switched to the case with the smooth (not pebble grain) exterior.
