Value of 38/44 outdoorsman box?
I am going to be at an auction next week where there is to be an absolutely horrid 1902 (refurbished with a belt sander, really) in a 38/44 outdoorsman box. Blue, metal corners, gold picture, 50 thousand range, number penciled on sticker on bottom, good condition. Now I don't have a gun that would go with that box but I absolutely plan on getting one eventually and I wouldn't mind having the box waiting to receive it. I did a past auction search on ebay and didn't come up with any thing similar. What's a fair price for a box like that. Thanks much as always.

Just to get the ball rolling, I'd say a loose box would go for at least $300, but it would add $400-500 to the price of a Heavy Duty alone if a gun-and-box package should appear.
If you can get the tortured 1902 and the box for $450-500, do it. Then part out the 1902 and put the money toward the proper HD.

Depending on the quality of the auction and sophistication of the bidders, the presence of the "doggy" gun may be a positive. Most folks may be focused on the gun and give little thought to the box. If so, start your bidding accordingly and go for what the gun is worth. If others wonder why anyone would want that dog, you just got a winner. If someone else stays with you over the value of the gun you know who your competition is and can stay as long as you think is worthwhile.

I would very much appreciate the serial number of the box if you are willing to pass it along ! I have records of several guns in that range and own a few myself. Good luck at the auction. Please post a photo if you bring it home !

Gold Standard.....
I traded two gallons of Maple Syrup (AAA Amber) for a Gold Outdoorsman's box not long ago.... Does that count?
Seriously, Maple Syrup is expensive!

Drew,
If a gold box is worth two gallons of maple syrup, a blue box should be worth a couple of maple trees!

MMMM, we always buy maple syrup in Vermont when we visit New England in October. Usually bring home a gallon and some quarts too.
