Anybody see the pre war 357 mag box on ebay
$1,575.00 for a pre war 357 mag box sold on ebay yesterday.
Sold as a registered Magnum box, looked like non registered box to me. Thoughts?

Wow. I haven't paid that much for any of my revolvers. In fact, I only have one gun that cost that much.

was cheap compared to some I have seen sell, but the box was in pretty darn good shape for its age. if the buyer owns the gun that serial numbers to it, the investment more than pays the sale price. that style of box would have been used for all pre WWII 357 magnums.

Highest I have heard of for an RM box is $3,000.
One of the reasons I am not a serious gun collector.

The box was for a registered magnum that went to Kansas City PD, the serial number and RM number were on tag on the bottom.

"Registered" and "Non Registered" are collector terms. All prewar magnums came in the same boxes (there were three sizes: small medium and large). There are two types of boxes - Type I was the early box that had a "picture" of a 357 with "service" stocks and a grip adapter, whereas the Type II box was a later box (probably starting sometime in 1936) came with a "picture" of the 357 with "magna" stocks. The box that sold was a medium size Type II box, from what I could tell.
I followed the auction and thought that the winning bid was a bit pricey for me (but then again, I have several boxes already).

Seven to ten thousand dollar revolvers when they're in high condition or have a pedigree , thousand dollar boxes and five hundred dollar sight adjustment tools.
These are the guns for those that feed at the top of the gun collecting food chain.
Look up "Ray Cheely" for information on the man who wrote the book on the S&W .357 Registered Magnums.
I wish we could trade a hundred "+ P" threads for one on Registered Magnum history.
