Default Help on a 2" barrell .38

Just found and joined...great site. A bit of a S&W enthusiat myself. Have a K-22 and a 15-3. Wanting to pick up a 27 or 28 when I find a good deal.
I need help on a 2" snubie that I inherited. It has a half moon front sight and no rear sight, so I'm thinking it's a model 10. No model number in the crane ...not sure when that started. Serial number is C71210. I've ordered the standard catalog but it's been back ordered for a month now. Thought somone might be able to help in the mean time. Thanks.

Bill

Welcome to the Forum (and apparently to the S & W obsession)

This is a .38 Military & Police, probably shipped in 1949 or '50. The rear sight is the groove in the top strap, which actually works pretty well but is obviously not adjustable. It was named the model 10 in 1957, so this one is not model-stamped. Enjoy!

Your gun appears to be a M&P which was the predecessor to the Model 10. According to the appendix in the SCSW the serial number is in the low end of the '48 to '51 serial number range, probably '48 or '49.

Bill, welcome to the forum. You have inherited one of the more popular .38 Special configurations of the post-WWII era. S&W made a few hundred of these two-inch snubnose .38s in the late 1930s, but they came into their own shortly after the war, when several thousand were made. The two-inch K-frame (that is, mid-size) revolvers are in demand compared to the more common four, five and occasional six-inch guns of this era, and they bring a bit of a premium when they sell. You didn't ask about value, but usually the postwar snubnose five-screw guns (four in the sideplate, one in the frame in front of the trigger guard) in 90% condition or better sell in the $400-500 range.

Wow, that was quick! Thanks for all of the information. I look forward to getting the standard catalog and learning some of the history of S&W.
