Gun Show Find: 44 HE 2nd Model
I'd like to say that I found this, but I'm not really sure it was lost. I was at the Mesquite, Texas, gun show last weekend, and this followed me home. Actually bdgreen had spotted it 2 weeks earlier at another gun show. Fortunately, he collects the smaller bore variations. This 44 HE 2nd model is SN 217xx with a ship date of January, 1924. The finish is matte blue, and it has the lanyard ring, so this was probably assembled from leftover 1917 frame. This gun appears to be all matching (no marks on grips that I can find) and is in nice condition. I bought some 44 special cowboy action loads to take to the range.

44HE
A really nice 2nd model 44. I love those grips! They would have sold me on it from the start. I also picked up a 2nd model at the AL Collector's Show in Birmingham last weekend. Not as nice as yours but, all matching except the after market grips. These 44s are my true passion and they shoot better than most of the newer guns (IMHO). I'd post photos, but this morning I dropped it (the camera) and now I need a new one. The serial number on my gun is 23544. Enjoy!!

That's a nice one and would make an excellent companion piece to a nice 1917.
The grips are pre-1920. But I like them much better than the correct ones which would have no medallions, just rounded wood tops.

Delta-419, I saw that one on one of my trips away from the table and I thought it looked pretty good. I was looking for 1917s but my luck was running behind me. Went to get one Sat afternoon and the folks had pulled out at lunch time. It was a GSP gun. Went over Sunday to get one that I had seen Sat with a notenglishmade stamp but it was gone. Did find a 1917 Colt for $300 so I got it and will try to find a Smith later on.

Randy,
Glad to see you pick that one up. It is a nice specimen.
I looked it over real hard, but, then I realized that the hole in the end of the barrel was way too big..
Good pictures of a nice gun.
