Default County Sheriff's 44 HE

About 4 years ago I bought a rifle from a local man. He showed me his Dad's 1931 gun. I passed on the 2nd model.

I went back to talk about the revolver just over 2 years ago. This time I bought it.

His father was the sheriff of our western colorado county from some time in the thirties. He said his Dad carried it, and that he transferred it to a town Marshall in the County. And that he subsequently reacquired it.

Unfortunately, the Marshall ( whom I've met with about this gun ) had a smithy or backyard smith chop off the front of the gun and install a banded sight. Then he grooved the top to take an adjustable sight.

She shoots quite accurately. I got a in-the-white barrel from OldWestGunsmith and a replacement hammer.....the hammer has been filed narrow.

Well, my real gunsmith friends said the new hammer wasn't going to fit, and that the new barrel would me possibly having a too-tall front sight. And the old original blue wouldn't happen.

So I have left it alone...... but now I want one that is untouched.

PS Most likely this was used to shoot a bank robber here...the Son told me about it and I did find something about it once, but it doesn't google right now. I am contacting the Historical Society for details. For what it's worth, a member of the Robber's Roost Wild Bunch did the other notorious bank heist.....Farmers & Merchants about 1895.

Well, I did find something about this 44 in a web link:

Default It is a nice piece of Law Enforcement history.....

Try to gather as much information as you can about the men who carried the revolver and keep it together for future generations to enjoy.

Photos, articles, accessories, other artifacts from their career all will enhance the revolver's history.

My goodness, man. That's like getting Eisenhower's field jacket and complaining about all those stars sewn on the collar. The gun you have is not only a good example of a period customized working gun (see the several threads on this topic recently) but also one with known provenance with historical significance. If you want one that is original, that's fine, but please don't mess with this one. It will never be original again, and you would lose much of this historical value if you try. JMHO, but I personally would be proud to own that gun just like it is, and would preserve as much history with it as possible.

Regards,
Froggie

Get some information on the robbery and the shootout. The gun will never be original and you will destroy the historic value by changing it. Or just shoot and enjoy it as it is. You said it was quite accurate, maybe the reason it was customized was that it was not very accurate or was damaged in use.

It would make a cool display with the historic info, can you get any of the sherrifs other paraphenalia like his badge, Id card, old news paper clippings, maybe a letter from S&W showing it was shipped to him??

Then you really have something Unique.

What was the sherrif's name and the name of your town???

Grips came on the gun.

So did the carry holster.
Gotta run, after coffee I'm getting out that generals jacket and looking for all those stars I dropped on the floor.

Leave her be!

I have no doubt she'll still "keep the peace" if called upon!

Great story Colokeb! Hope you can acquire the badges to go with your revolver. They should stay together.
