An acquaintance from a different state sent me a question about a S&W .22 in his possession. From his description, it seems he has a .22/.32 Heavy Frame Target. He gives the serial number as 240182.
My thinking is that this gun was shipped after the "Bekeart Model" made it into the catalog in 1915, but prior to the government takeover of S&W in 1917.
As expected, the charge holes are not counterbored.
Any thoughts on this gun?

I'd estimate that gun dates to early 1917, although I wouldn't be shocked if it turned out to letter to the tail end of 1916.

Yep, it's a .22/32 HFT... probably has the Bekeart type grips if they are original. Of course this one is in the pre-hardened cylinder range. Best to shoot with lower pressure, standard velocity ammo only of course. I'm gonna guess 6" barrel at that time. I'm not sure the "kit gun" concept for .22s had arrived yet when that one was built.

I agree the Kit Gun concept didn't come along until 1935, a couple hundred thousand guns after that one.

SSDWHR, Welcome to the Forum. My condolences on the passing of your father. Your .22/32. Heavy Frame Target was manufactured by Smith & Wesson on June 4, 1914. You can obtain a factory historical letter from Roy Jinks, Factory Historian, which will tell you when, where and in what configuration the gun was shipped, for $50. Ed.
