BCPD 38/44 HEAVY DUTY ARRIVES
I JUST ACQUIRED ANOTHER BCPD 38/44 HEAVY DUTY WITH PERIOD LEATHER. THIS IS ONE OF 100 SHIPPED TO MARSHALL WELLS CO FOR BCPD IN OCTOBER 1940. THEY WERE SHIPPED IN TWO SHIPMENTS OF 50 EA. THIS ONE WAS IN THE SECOND SHIPMENT AND IS 62207 WITH A RACK NUMBER OF BCP239. IT IS ALL MATCHING AND IS ABOUT 98%+. I HAVEN'T TAKEN ANY PICTURES MYSELF BUT I AM GOING TO USE A PREVIOUS OWNERS PICS UNTIL I CAN. THIS IS THE NICEST BCPD I HAVE PHYSICALLY SEEN.
ENJOY,
BILL

Bill, that one is very nice. The mirror finish is still very clear and the grips look almost unused. It seems to me it is now where it belongs.

I think there's probably more BCP guns in your safe than in Canada.

Bill,
Congratulations on getting this.
It's not only a nice package with all the leather items, it's also a wonderful addition to your collection of BCPD Heavy Duty's.
I know where it will be staying for a very long time to come!

Lord, I hope so! Who knows what might happen to them up there in Nanny-land?!
Is that actually authentic BC police leather, or RCMP stuff? Looks like the latter. Or, did they use the same items? I'm thinking that the provincial police there got absorbed by RCMP and the guns were then issued by that force, anyway?
And I think I read here awhile back that the BC cops didn't even issue hot .38-44 ammo for those, just routine standard-speed stuff?

British Columbia Police Dept. or BC Provincial Police. I don't know the exact name; someone will.
Keep in mind that RCMP then issued the Colt New Service revolver, so their holsters were sized for those. I bet they'd take N-frame S&W's, too.
On the off-chance that someone might not know, RCMP= Royal Canadian Mounted Police. They previously had several other names, but only that from 1920, if memory serves. They are the Federal cops up there, sometimes the only cops. I had some exposure to them in Newfoundland when I was the USAF police liason with them. Talked to one from their Musical Ride at the Texas State Fair, too. He was from Alberta and seemed more laid back than the others. My overall impression is that they are hard men, with more authority than US police, and maybe less oversight.
I was astonished to see one on live TV (a police reality show like our, "Cops") tell a drunk in Burnaby, BC that he'd shoot him if he didn't get out of his car. I hope it was a bluff. I have the distinct impression that most Canadians fear them, but have great faith in them to maintain order.
One told me that they "usually aren't mean, just very highly trained."
Not that much of this has a lot to do with the topic. Thought it might be peripherally interesting.

Last Saturday I was at a jeeping event. My trail was the last to leave town, so we had a minor wait. The Utah police department closes down US 191 for as long as possible (20 minute limit or all kinds of problems start, also, they don't time it). I customarily sit in my jeep at the head of the line. Suddenly the cop blocking traffic (who I've known for 20 or 25 years) yells that he needs me, now. So I jump out and run over to him. He's starting to run up the street where there is a problem. He's yelling at me "tell anyone who passes my cruiser that I'll shoot them". Then takes off to the problem on foot. Most of the people already stopped are out of their cars, standing around watching. The expression on their faces was priceless. One nice lady asked if he means it. The only answer I could think of was "oh yeah, he's serious." Lots of others were smiling, but no one moving.
Cops seem to use that line from time to time. With great effect.

Any time you can scare people into compliance, you don't have to hurt them. It is not always smooth and polished. Once while working a joint operation with USAF Security Forces, I had a retired AF NCO tell me I was scary looking (I didn't wear Class A/B uniforms, hats and other crud; of course nothing shiny or clanking; shaved my head; pretty good sized, etc. I thanked him. When he gave me the look of a chicken watching card tricks, I explained why.
RCMP and other agencies working in such environments have a hard and weird job. They have to talk real well, and always seem as fair to everyone as they can be, but in the end, they are often alone with no assistance for many miles. Decent folks who appreciate the talking fair side will help them if they can, but bad guys need to fear them. I've met some RCMP folks here for training and joint operations, shows, etc. Good guys.

Thanks to everyone! I think there are still a lot of these in Canada and wish we could get them down south where they will be preserved.
