S&W 19 combat magnum 1958..
We all like our big N frames and many have a Smith J frame in a pocket for day to day carry. The older I get the less weight is better.
Was able to get over to my deer lease today and roam a bit.
I packed this. Strapped one on in 1972 and I have NEVER been without a
couple S&W 19's.
This one started out in Texas and spent the next 25 years in New Mexico before bought it a few years ago.

Beautiful Combat Magnum, My favorite S&W revolver of all time !
I think the grips are slightly newer than 1958 maybe 1963 ?

The non relieved and 50's era football relieved targets have the same shape to their checkering pattern ,
The shape of the pattern changes after about 1962...ish (nothing is absolute or exact with S&W).
Compare the outside border shape of the checkering on these pre 1962 diamond target grips :
to the outside border shape of these from 1964, primarily focus on turn at the bottom right corner,
(forget the football relief thats been sanded larger).
My guess is in the ever ongoing attempts to speed up production they figured it was either quicker or had less chance of damaging the wood.
Wheres Waldo ?

You know, I've always hoped that someone could put together as a sticky a comprehensive group of pictures showing all S&W revolver grip styles from the beginning showing dating and detail differences. I can spot many by eye, but I frequently have to go back through my collection of old Gun Digests and Shooter's Bibles to date ones I am not familiar with.
