Smile Need to I.D. an early S&W .38 Special "K" frame.

I picked up this "parts" revolver at a flea market last week. It needs completing. But, I need some help identifying what I have here. Any relatively knowledgeable individuals chime in please.

OK, it is basically a "K" frame revolver with a 5" barrel. The last engraved date on top of the barrel is "July 03" and ALL of the engraved patent dates are in between what looks like tiny oblong Iron Crosses, one on the left and one on the right of all the dates. The serial number is 11426X. "43169" is engraved on the frame inside where the yoke rests. On the left side of the barrel, it is engraved ".38 S&W Special" and under that is "U.S. Service Ctg's."

It needs a hammer nose and pin, 3 of the 4 sideplate screws, the cylinder stop's plunger and spring, a cylinder rod and all other related parts except the extractor, grip panels just to name a few parts that are missing. There is no finish on the revolver either. The serial number on the frame and barrel match.

So, what in the world did I pick up here and (when) I get this revolver back on its feet, what will it be worth? Also, where would I be able to pick up all my missing parts at? I looked at GPC's site, but they're out of a lot of what I need.

As always, THANKS to all of you gentlemen and professionals for always helping me out when I need it. I am very grateful.

Kim in NW GA.

From the SN, this is most likely a .38 Military & Police model 1905, third change, from about 1907 or '08. You may try Jack First or Poppert's Gun Parts for the ones you need. Given the lack of finish, even if it is mechanically sound you may have put more money into it than it is worth, but projects sometimes work out that way.

I think there's a typo in Alan's posting above. The serial number places the gun as either a 1st change or a 2nd change, Model of 1905. If there are 2 dowel pins in the star extractor, it's a 2nd change. Close serial numbers were shipped between 1906 and 1910, as shipping dates do not follow sequence of serial numbers. the 43168 stamping is a work/ assembly number used to keep parts together during the fitting & polishing, and has no relation to the serial number. The dual caliber stampings on the barrel indicate the barrel is a carry over from earlier production when the US Army & Navy contract guns required the barrels be stamped "U.S.Service Ctg." for the military equivalent of the .38 S&W Special round.
I agree with Alan that parts will cost more than the gun will be worth, if completed. Apparently it has already deployed as a parts donor gun before you got it. Good Luck, however! Ed.

Thanks Alan and Ed,

Yep, you're both right...sometimes one can get upside-down in a project such as this. Thanks also for all your info on it, too.

I don't plan on refinishing the gun, just painting it O.D. Green. I'll try the 2 gun parts vendors that you suggested...thanks again.
