Default Question on this Smith

This Smith has a 6 1/2 inch barrel, round butt, S/N 343XX
(5 digits)
Grips are not original (gun was found in a semi protected spot in early '70s, pretty badly rusted but cleaned up good, grips gone)
Action is tight and barrel is in great shape, shoots well.
I am curious about its history, and exactly what it is. If anybody has any idea, I sure appreciate it.

Military & Police Model of 1902, first change. Shipped about 1903. Refinished. OK to shoot modern standard ammo, but avoid +P ammo.

Thanks for the quick response. I thought it might be an M & P but wasn't sure.
