Numbers stamped on the cylinder
When do S&W stop stamping the numbers on the face of the cylinder? Was it in the Mid 50's for most J and K frame revolvers?

I believe it was about 1957 or a little later, when "soft fitting" of parts prior to finishing and final assembly stopped.

Dick, Does your 34-1 have any rework marks on it (1st attachment), or is it nickel?
I have a few revolvers with serialized parts (2nd attachment) that have been reworked by S&W.
However, I have been noticing '70s revolvers lately with serialized cylinders (3rd attachment) but no rework marks. But, they have all been nickel revolvers so that raises some other questions for me.
I'd like to hear what the rest of you have observed.

An interesting question...and one I've studied a little. The six locations for serial #, including the right grip (and eight on pre war target guns), normally found on 1950's vintage guns went away c.56-57 as Murphy Dog said.
One of the last to go was the the rear face of the cylinder which happened a few years later. However the one under the ejector star, sometimes the back side of the star, seems to have hung around for another c. 10 to 20 years. Dick, on your 34-1 is it in the open on rear face or under the star?
I have not been able to correlate to nickel or reworked guns.
P.S. The serial # on the back side of the right grip wasn't eventually eliminated until the late '70s when grip production was deemed uniform enough to use generic grips vs. handfit to each gun.

I thought I had a 22/32 Mod 34 with no other numbers except grip and butt. But with a good flashlight, there it was on the backside of the star.
Thanks!

Jim. I just rechecked and there are NO other numbers anywhere. Strange thing though. I have a very late M53 shipped 11-1974 that has the serial number stamped into the cylinder under the extractor in smaller numbers. Big Larry
