Default S&W M&P date of manufacturer?

I've done some research and I can't quite seem to come up with any solid dates on the pistol except it is most likely post 1915. I purchased it at a pawn shop and it had quite a bit of surface rust on the barrel and the back of the grip frame where a palm would have had direct contact with it. The gun itself is old, the question being how old? It is chambered in .38 Special.

The serial numbers on the cylinder and frame star out with C 330 and three last numbers. I don't know what the C means.

The serial numbers on the swing out for the cylinder and the inside of the frame (they butt up against eachother when the cylinder is closed) look like this

7
8726 6
7

Any ID help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum.

The C330XXX serial number would indicate you have a .38 Military & Police from 1955 - 1956. The numbers in the yoke cutout of the frame that you listed are internal factory numbers and are not significant once it left the factory.

You didn't mention the barrel length but these M&Ps came in 2", 4", 5" and 6" with 4" being the most common. In 1957 model numbers were assigned and the M&P became the Model 10.

Thank you, That really helps put a good date on it. So it's just before they became the model 10. It has a six inch barrel on it, long as hell but very accurate.
