Picked Up A 14-1 Today
What's kind of strange about it is it has a 4 inch barrel with the same profile as a 6 inch model (not tapered). It's serial# is K4535XX. On the left side of frame (when I removed the grips), APD135 is engraved in the frame, so I'm assuming it was a police gun at one time. It got traded in at one of the local gun stores I visit. I'd rate it at 80-85% condition. Bought it for $299. Unfortunately, I can't post pics of it. Anyone else have one of these 4 inch heavy barred 14's?

I've seen them for sale before, don't have one though. Original 4" barrel? Not cut down? The ones I've seen that were cut down were obvious, the rollmarks weren't centered. I have read about some being made with 4" barrels and read about LE agencies cutting down 6" barrels.
I just typed this out on my phone and realized its probably of little to no help...

Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks for your reply. It's a factory barrel. All roll marks are in the correct locations and the barrel has the proper S&W crown on the front (it's not flat). The gun looks like a Model 19 without the ejector rod being enclosed.

I don't recall the serial ranges, but there were a couple batches of four inch 14's made for Dayton Distributors. Seems like a lot of the ones we see and hear about also went to law enforcement.
There are a few of those in the hands of forum members and no doubt someone can fill in the holes in the story.

There are several threads in the 1961 to 1980 section that share some good information on the various 4" Model 14s . . . here are two:
Model 14 with 4-inch barrel
Four inch 14-3 (update: It lettered)
Enjoy . . . they are fine revolvers,
Russ
