Worth the money! Shipping dates for close serial numbers range from late 1946 to mid 1947. Ed.

I'd estimate based on my limited database that your M&P shipped around June of 1947.

It is nice, and you did very well on the price. I have a 6", from June of 1919. Unfortunately, my dad stored it in a leather holster for years. This caused blue loss on the cylinder and muzzle. Still shoots well though! Enjoy your M&P! Mine may be taking a range trip tomorrow. Bob

Excellent score, and a terrific price. Congratulations.
You have good information on the likely shipping date already, but i'll just observe on a framing basis that the last S-prefix M&Ps were manufactured around April of 1948. I have a snubnose M&P S868055 that shipped in January 1947 but may have sat on the shelf for a couple of months. Mid-to late 1947 is a good approximation for the ship date on your gun.
That's a really handsome gun in enviable condition. The postwar S-prefix M&Ps are some of the most appealing basic revolvers that S&W ever made.

Thanks for all the replies this is starting to be a problem the same way when I bought my first Mauser first it was a 1871 then a 71/84 then a 91 so on and so forth .Then the Smith & Wesson bug started with a model 37 because I needed a good carry gun. Then I saw a K22 very good condition bought it and it out shot any thing I had. Then came 29-2 with 4inch barrel then I came across a model 67 with a 4 inch barrel now this one and a few others anyone see a pattern forming.

Does anyone see a problem here, cause for the life of me, I don't see one! Seems perfectly normal to me!

Merl, that's a beautiful gun at a great price. . it looks in excellent condition, good for you! .
It's amazing how much enjoyment we get for a few hundred dollars. I bought an early post war M&P a few weeks back, from a senior gentleman clean across the country, and it finally showed up this morning. . serial # S 85721x
