Default Please! Show Me Your M&P Targets

I think this one shipped early 1929.I would rate it about 90%.It has a Call bead front sight which makes it easy on my old eyes.I would like to know where and when it shipped, so I think its worthy of a factory historical letter.I have been a collector of pre-war n frames for many years, this is my first pre-war k. Now I think I'm hooked.Whats next a 22 outdoorsman?DSC_0004.jpg

Here's a quick snap of my M&P Target (above), and yes, my .22 Outdoorsman (below).

And a view of the stocks:

Does this answer your question about the .22?

I've shown this pic a few times over the years, but not since moving to Tennessee....

It's in the 649000 range.

Some nice revolvers here. I'll add this specimen, which is slightly spotty and not particularly special except that it came to me with an original Wesson grip adapter on it. The letter doesn't say anything about the adapter, so it was probably a later addition.

I have a humpback hammer on it at the moment, but that's an anachronism. The gun shipped in 1935 before the HBH was an option.

I love those ivory stocks. They are such a nice contrast to the blued steel.

Silly question ... are the flutes on older guns cut differently? They look different when compared to the newer ones.

Default Fred Millers Pair of K-frames

Here is a pair of guns made up for Fred Miller of S&W. One is a .38, the other is a
2nd model K-22. Both have the same custom Roper stocks. They were previously
owned by Rex Applegate.

Thumbs up I missed this Thread the 1st time Around

Great thread with some wonderful photos of some of my favorite guns. This deserves another shot to the top. So, I'll post a few photos of my most recent pre-war M&P Target acquisitions:

Not super pristine, but the price was right and the front sight is interesting (looks a little like the front sights on the Rex Applegate 38's posted by Mike Priwer):

Someone had to have a 4" gun - and this became the subject for the 6" to 4" conversion:

Lastly, a couple of quick photos of a well used, relatively early M&P Target:

Fist picture is as I bought it. The second is with Jay Scott faux stags. It has some wear on the frame and the muzzle but it shoots well.

I showed this in another thread recently, but it probably fits in this one too. This M&P Target originally shipped in 1931, but it was modified years later with a large micro-click rear sight like the ones S&W started putting on the Masterpiece models after WWII. The higher front sight, which imitates the shape of the front sight on the Model of 1946 "Mexican" (but lacks the Call gold bead insert) is necessary to match the higher positioning of the rear sight blade. I suspect this conversion was done in the late 1940s, perhaps when an enthusiastic target shooter grew tired of waiting for S&W to get off the dime and push the new K-38 Masterpiece out the door (promised 1946, finally appeared as a production item 1948).

The left-hand Ropers didn't come on the gun. I just thought they looked better than the incorrect postwar magnas that it was wearing when I got it.

This was given to a Springfield MA Police Officer by Victor Wesson Jan 1931. It was the 20th K-22 made. It is going to be my display piece at the Annual in KC next June.

Here are a couple. A .38 M&P Target ca. 1921 and a K-22 Masterpiece ca. 1948.

It looks to me to be "non-factory". The close up photos show the detail better than I can see it with my eyes. I too think that the top 1/8th inch appears to be "added". My guess is that the gun shot high and the extra sight was soldered to an existing blade give a bit more height to the front. BTW - I have to agree that it would cut quite a groove in a holster, especially if it was removed rapidly in a quick draw fashion.

The left-hand Ropers didn't come on the gun. I just thought they looked better than the incorrect postwar magnas that it was wearing when I got it.
David:

First - I love the Ropers on that gun. Second - I can't remember if you posted the photos of the top strap with the rear sight, but does it have the rounded/contoured "tongue/foot" of the prewar 22/40's or the grooved "tongue/foot" of the post-war micrometer sights?

Not super pristine, but the price was right and the front sight is interesting (looks a little like the front sights on the Rex Applegate 38's posted by Mike Priwer):

Someone had to have a 4" gun - and this became the subject for the 6" to 4" conversion:

Lastly, a couple of quick photos of a well used, relatively early M&P Target:

i like the 4 in. the best.

Richard, it's a ribbed Masterpiece sight, and the edges rise above the rounded top of the frame. But the front of the sight is shaped to match the contours of the frame's front top region, so the front of the foot doesn't just hang out there in space. Here's the thread where I show a couple of pics of this:

Hello Gentlemen. I'm new to the forum. I saw the post and decided to bring my M&P Target out of the safe for some fresh air. This piece was presented to a Toronto Police Officer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) after winning a pistol competition in 1931. It was presented to him by the Chief of Police at the time, Brigadier General D. C. Draper. This Officer, Police Constable Robert Umphrey, #387 Joined the T.P.F in 1910, retired in 1942 and sadly passed away in 1950. I acquired this revolver from Robert Umphrey's daughter who found it in a shoe box, in a closet as she was preparing her parents house for sale after her mother died in the late 80's.

824tsv, welcome to the forum.

I like P.C. Umphrey's revolver a lot. Congratulations on having been chosen to care for it during this phase of its existence.

Love your hand ejector target. I have same model and barrel length/grip that dates to 1907, but yours is in a lot better shape, as mine is totally patinated finish. Great gun!
