Default Dave (keith44) made me do it

Most of ya'll who've been on this forum any time atall know Ol' Dave is a fairtamiddlin' hidestretcher and ever so often can put together a rite handy pistola.Well, whilst I was a eyeballin' some of his handiwork, I remembered an ol' 1917 I picked up 20 or so years ago that was not a collecter as it had had the barrel shortened and the whole sheebang had been nickled. The barrel was pretty much worn out and it's been toted some, but mostly just laid in the gun closet. I decided it'd make a good candidate for some fiddlin'.

Picked me up a new 3" acp barrel and a ss 625 cylinder and hauled 'um over to my local 'smitty' for some remodeling. The barrel swapin' went ok, but he took the bit in his teeth when it come to turnin that ss 625 colt cylinder down th fit the '17. Wouldn't do it atall.

While the rebarrelin was going on, I got ta thinkin' about the cylinder that was on the '17 an thought I remember it havin' been bored out to .45colt by some previous owner and called Larry to see ifn my recolectin' was kerect. It was.

Well now most of ya'll know that the 1917 won't shoot colts on accounta the head spacin' (the colt's rim ain't thick enuff). But I jist happened to have a couple or two pieces of .45winmag brass stashed away for 'tradin' material and a few of them 1/3moon clips do-dads. Now the winmag case ain't as deep as the colt case but it'd take a Schofield load right smart and with them 1/3mooners, they'll head space jist fine.

Brought the Ol' 1917 home today, here she is:

Russell

I know what you mean myself I have done so as well.Had and old 2nd model .44 spl wasn't a collector as well sent er off to the smith and turned it into 4 1/2" adjustable sight. Did the same with .357 magnum here had the 5" cut to 3.5". Both shoot great and they are what I wanted.Like what you did think'n outside the box so to speak. Dave sure hs done his fair share of revamp'n they turn out mighty fine.Like how that turned out on that ol 1917.

Thanks Rusty

Kinda like this ratty ol HD...
Some one in it's past had lengthen'd it chambers for the magnum cartridge and
inscribed their handle on the side of it with a horseshoe nail...

Wells I cleaned off what I didn't want and end up with somethin' I did want.

Russell, there's something I'm not clear on.

I understand if the steps were bored out of the chambers of the cylinder for it to accept .45 Colt cartridges, how that would prevent a .45 acp case from chambering on the case mouth, if used without moon clips. But I don't understand how that would affect a .45 acp case if it was used in a moon clip. The moon clip would hold the .45 acp case even with the steps being bored out of the chambers. So why did you use .45 winmag brass in moon clips instead of just using .45 acp brass in the moon clips?
Did the previous owner also increase the diameter of the chambers when they bored the steps out of them? If that is indeed what they did, then I can understand. But I thought the .45 acp case and the .45 Colt case were the same diameter so why would the diameter of the chambers have to be enlarged as well as the steps removed. I just don't see how the steps in the chambers being removed stopped you from using .45 acp in half moon clips. Kinda confused. Please enlighten me.

.

Russ,

I tried to use a set-up like this once...It worked fairly well.

I can see where the longer win mag case would increase powder capacity and reduce bullet jump.

Su Amigo,
Dave

Bill,
I didn't use .45 winmag brass in lieu of .45 acp, I used it in lieu of .45colt. I still shoot acp, auto-rim, and now winmag (in lieu of colt). The original idea behind this project, besides giving new life to a 'shot-out old N-frame, was to make the pistol capable of firing acp/AR and with a cylinder swap, .45colt. I was unable to get my 'smith to fit the 625 .45colt cylinder to the '17 so, unless I could come up with a solution, I was 'dead in the water' as to .45colt. The use of the .45winmag cases with 1/3moon clips allows me to do so until I can figure out, with Daves help, how to get the colt cylinder 'fitted'.
