Default 44 special hand ejector 2nd model

I have a chance to purchase a 44 special hand ejector 2nd model that has been reblued. The serial number places it 1916-1918.
The bore is very good and it has smooth walnut stocks with no lanyard.

They want $415 for it. What are your thoughts on this?

the price sounds ok for a first class reblue.
to me that means all the lettering and stamps are almost as crisp as they were when the gun was made.

pics??

It's a good price for a mechanically sound .44 HE. However, there is a great variation in "reblued" - if it was carefully done vs. blurred stampings, dished screw holes, wavy metal surfaces, blued hammer/trigger. Also, this one should have checkered stocks with gold medallions; from your description, it probably has 1917 Army replacement stocks.

Having said all that, if you are just looking for a shooting gun, it is a fair price. Are you able to post photos? Hope this is helpful.

Sounds like a fair price. Most sellers want colector prices for reblued guns. If the bore is sharp and the timing sound you will have a great S&W in a great caliber for a good price.

Gentlemen, I found this string and have a question for anyone who feels helpful. I found a 2nd model HE, .44 Spec. 4" barrel, with lanyard loop. has the 'Made in USA' stamp only on the right side. looks like a re-blue, but if so, its a good one. Any idea/guess-timate on value?

Well, $415 was a fair price 2 1/2 years ago, so I would guess $450 now .

If it is mechanically sound and not too bad cosmetically, a 4" 2nd model .44 HE would be at least in the $500-600 range, higher if nicer. Photos would help here.

chasr - start another thread to ask your question. That is always a better option than adding on to a previous thread.

If the barrel measures 4in from CYLINDER front face to muzzle, it is likely cut. Perhaps someone measured a 5in barrel from frame to muzzle?

Jim: Thanks for the advice, i will do that in the future! Sorry, I mis-typed the barrel length. It measures 5" from muzzle to cylinder face, therefore i believe it is an original 5", not cut, as the calibre panel on the right side is centered. It was re-blued, but i haven't looked under the grip to see if the factory did it or not.

Harney71, it sounds good for that model if, as others have said, it's in good mechanical condition and a good refinish. BTW, my name is Harney also. PM when you get a chance.
