Default Smith and Wesson model 1950

Hi all, checked in at local favorite gun shop and they have a consigned gun laying in case was in hurry tag read S&W model 1950 price was $1600 quick eyeball look from case seemed in NRA excellant condition tag also said box and paperwork included! Can anyone give me a headsup on what to look for on this model i think the front sight was forged half moon and rear was adjustable i saw partial serial # s139??? Tag said was made in 1951 ? The blueing was a matte blue dull finish. Looked like maybe 6 inch barrel? Thinking about going back tuesday and checking it out closely couldnt see what caliber was.

Chief,

First, let me say that there are a number of guns that might be labeled as "Model of 1950". The first thing to determine is what is the caliber. It could be either . 38 Sp., .357, .44 Special, or .45 ACP. That serial number would probably put it in the 1955-56 era.

One thing that concerns me is that you said that it has a half moon front sight and adjustable rear sight. The front sight that you describe would be on a military model (with a fixed rear sight). You need to be sure that someone hasn't modified the gun by adding an adjustable rear sight. If that was done the collector value would be considerably less than you mentioned.

Look the gun over again. First, check the grip frame, front and back to see if its got the factory grooving. They put them on nearly all the factory target sighted guns (but not necessarily those made before maybe the 1920s.) Its not certain, but an indicator. You also could have a fixed sight barrel stuck on a target frame. Things happen. And of course you could even get a factory letter to confirm what is suspected. And of course you can call S&W and talk to Roy and see how it came from God.
