There are several NYPD members who post here and they can tell you from direct knowledge, but I recall reading that sidearms have been purchased by individual officers for quite some time and would not be stamped. If it helps, I once saw a .32 Colt that was engraved "New York Police" on the backstrap - when Theodore Roosevelt was the NYPD Commissioner .

Try a Google for Robert Vivas. He's the NYPD gun historian and can tell you all you want to know & more about NYPD gun markings, etc. Ed.

For as long as I can remember, NYPD has never "issued" department-owned guns. Instead, officers buy their weapons from NYPD from a small number of approved weapons. I am not aware of any NYPD weapons having any special markings, except the so-called NY-1 revolvers which were the special DAO revolvers made by S&W prior to the NYPD switch to semi-auto pistols.
The current approved list, which can be bought through the NYPD equipment bureau, are the S&W 5946 DAO 9mm, the SIG Sauer 226 in DAO and the Glock 19 with the so-called New York Number 2 trigger.
I read a thread on this forum, I think, a couple years ago, concerning possible approval of the S&W M&P in 9mm, but I have not heard that it actually has been approved for purchase.
It is possible that NYPD weapons were department owned in the first half of the twentieth century, I suppose, but I am fairly certain that anything after WWII was not marked with any departmental markings.
Hopefully, R.M. Vivas will chime in as he has much more knowledge on this than I.

I'm retired NYPD, and cops purchased their weapons from the Equipment Section at 1 Police Plaza. They are the officers property and he keeps it when he retires or switches to another agency. Back in 1995, the union picked up the tab with help of federal funds, and the cop only pays for nightsights. I have seen old cop guns with the officer's name and shield number on the backstrap, but i think that was done by the officer and not required. Gives it a pretty cool look, if you ask me, and it was done professionally so it looked good. Never seen one personally, and guys I worked with were hired early 70's and forward. I think it was an old timer's thing that ended by the mid 60's. If I came across one of those guns, I would at least TRY to find the owner or his heirs and offer to sell it to them at what I paid for it. Things like that should stay in the family, even if it's just gonna sit in a safe.

I bought this 1947 M&P from Vivas and Sons a few years ago. It was issued to an NYPD officer named Fitzpatrick, who retired in 1968. His shield number is stamped on the butt near the serial number.
According to Mr Vivas, the nickel finish is legit. He said guns had to blue when purchased, but could be nickeled afterwards, a fairly common thing.

This is a SV commercial victory 1946, it did its time on the NYPD.
I have the info someplace filed away, date of transfer to officer name. The bottom of the grip is the badge number. Its nothing fancy, but I guess it helped for a easy way to figure out whats was whos.
As written above these were the officers personal property so no NYPD markings. I have seen some that were engraved NYPD and numbers but I think this was done by the officers possibly after leaving the force.
Now some guns ARE marked NYPD, they were department owned. There are Ruger Mini-14s and some pump shotguns.
I have seen some revolvers stamped on the back strap I am not sure it that is or isnt NYPD.
R.M Vivas is the person to ask, he hasnt been here in a while.
