Let's see those 1926 .44 Specials!
Well, Lee asked for a 3rd Model Hand Ejector .44 thread, so let's start one.
I'll kick it off with one. Back in my college days, I read Elmer Keith's Sixguns and decided I needed a .44 Special. By chance, a invitation to a local gun club meeting introduced me to a fellow student, who then became a very close friend.
Another friend and I were waiting for the meeting when a feller rolled up in a '66 Chevy II, jumped out, and said, "Hey! I'm .44 Special and I have a Frank E. !" Well, that's what several of us told him over the years was the way that he introduced himself.
Anyway, Frank did indeed have a .44 Special. It was a post WW II 3rd Model, 5" with an aftermarket nickel finish (including the hammer and trigger, unfortunately) and Magna grips. It was the first one I had ever seen. Later trips to the range proved that it could still shoot.
Well, of course, I lusted over his revolver. I started looking for one of my own. Now, this was about 7-8 years after S&W had dropped the .44 Special and they were as scarce as hen's teeth. I would occasionally see one at a gun show, but they were always out of my price range.
I did have a M27 converted to .44 Special in 1976, after reading every article that Skeeter Skelton ever wrote on the subject, plus Major George Nonte's book on pistolsmithing. But, I still wanted a 1926.
Fast forward to 2005. I was working in Afghanistan and timed my leave around the big gunshow held near Dulles, Virginia. I walked the show once, and decided to make a second time around before going to my motel room. That's when I spotted a nickel N frame in a dealer's case. Yep, it was a 1926 .44. 5" barrel, wearing 1930's service grips. I looked it over good, had the dealer pull the grips, and then then talked him down $50.
Once back at my room, I called fellow Forum member tennexplorer. He and I go back to early college days at Auburn and he actually has the guts to blame ME for his .44 Special addiction!
I started telling him about my purchases-a Colt .32, some scope mounts, ammo, a .44 Special.............. That's when he interrupted me, wanting to know the gory details.
Those of us that love these old .44s know that the first 1926 was serial number 28358. Well, the one I found is serial number 28363 and it is the lowest known numbered survivor in the 1926 series.
My letter from Mr Jinks says that mine was in the first shipment to Wolf & Klar on January 27th, 1927. That order was for 75 nickel 5" revolvers. Mine went back to the factory in February 1942 and it was refinished and received new grips.
Enough reading; let's see some pictures. It is now wearing non-medallion grips, which is what it wore when it was shipped.

.44 Hand Ejector, Model of 1926. (3rd)
Let's get this started.
This is a mission from 'The Great Ape' hisself.
The ".44 Hand Ejector, Model of 1926 (Third Model)" if I have the correct model name.
As you will see from my avatar, I have one.
Serial number 298XX. I haven't 'lettered' it but my Forum research points to 1928.
This is a revolver is of great value for two reasons.
#1. It's a great shooter.
#2. Nobody has messed with it. (except for the stocks.)
The stock problem was solved by a gift from a great friend. They are correct for the model, but NOT comfortable to shoot.
It all started when I talked a friend into buying it at a local gun show for the horrible price of $200. With the ever popular Jay Scott black pearl plastic grips. (15 years ago)
A few months later he traded it to me for Webley .455 Mk II. He thought it looked cool. I couldn't hit the ground with the Webley. So everybody is fat, dumb and happy.
I've done all I can.
Now it's up to you. Lets have PICTURES. Detailed information on the model and history.

I need to type faster. You beat me by 20 minutes.
I don't know if I should have my thread moved to yours or see who gets more posts.

Looked for a 1926 for 20 years. Was offered one by a member here for $650. A bit more than I wanted to pay but you know the saying: The time to buy is when you are holding it in your hands.
Within a month I found another priced at $400. Bagged it, too. Both were original nickel guns but had been refinished. The first one was buffed too much and the second one was in better shape so I sold the first one at a slight loss. Here's the one I kept. Shipped to W&K 7/6/28.

All of these are very nice revolvers. Gripper, that 4" nickel w/box is just amazing. I someday hope to get a decent blue-worn or reblue but tight shooter grade, anybody got an extra?

Recently acquired Model 1926 and I've been too busy to take any pix; 5" post-war transition, all matching numbers, and I do have an un-numbered gold box.
Will shoot, and shoot photos when it calms down around here.

I knew I shouldn't have looked at this thread. Great guns everyone. A fixed sight, light barrel N-frame makes me light-headed. Then that feeling moves down to my wallet.

My old .44 that the pawnshop guy shined up with a buffer before putting it out for sale. Going to get around to having it re-nickled . Done found me a new hammer and trigger for it on the flea-bay. The price was right so it will make a good shooter one day.

I have one other 1926. This one is a 5" with original blue finish. It is # 37585, which shipped March 1931. This one has the squared notch rear sight, while my nickel 1926 has the round top frame with the tiny notch rear, like the WW I era 1917 revolvers.
I don't have a good gun show story on this one. Rather, I contacted David Carroll and asked him to find me a good shooter grade blue 1926. This is the one he sold me. It didn't have the correct grips, so I bought is sans grips. I added these Kurac Magnas with the "coke" profile. The grip adapter is a Pachmayr.
It also has a grooved trigger, while the nickel 'un has a smooth one. One oddity is the early 1917 grooved hammer.

This particular piece took one additional side trip on the way to its proper home. I had it for a short while.
Thus endeth my brief membership in this club.

Hi
The 1926 4 inch Target pictured below is one of only two 4 inch Targets documented.
This one was shipped in 1940 to J.M. West of the Davidson County Sheriff Dept. Nashville
TN.
The other 4 inch Target is owned by Dick Berg.
Enjoy the pictures and the information.

Here's my 3rd Model 44. It has experienced a barrel bob, a heavy hand at a buffing wheel, and reblue at some point in the past, but it is still one of my favorite "shooters", and finds its way into the woods from time to time. Currently wearing a set of catalin grips that showed up in the mailbox today.

Hey Lee!
Not to wander too far off the .44 HE3 topic, but I just thought that you be interested to know that I have an early postwar HD in the 74,000 serial range that has the same front sight, but without the serrations...
It also has a factory rework date of May, 1955....
And a diamond "change" marking...

Looks kinda like a little New Service "shark fin" front sight.

Hi
This thread has stalled how about a 1926 King gun shipped in 1940.
This one is 99% it has the King front and Rear with a McGivern gold Bead front sight
Magna are numbered to the gun.
It has to be one of the last ones shipped before the war and was send to king for the
sights. It has not been shot since it was reworked by King.

TWO PAIR NICKEL'S CONSECUTIVE SERIAL NUMBERS
hI
Here are two pair of 1926 nickel's with consecutive serial numbers.
The 6 1/2 inch nickel's were shipped 7/7/1941 to Seattle Washington
in a shipment of 10 revolvers.
The 4 inch pair was shipped a month apart. to Wolf and Klar.
Serial number 55147 is 99% and 33608 is also 99%
the other two have some wear.
enjoy the pictures

How do you guys manage the large photos here on the Forum now? I used to be able to accomplish that but seem to have lost the knack.
Anyway here's one shipped in 1931. Was factory refinished in July of 1975. The replacement N-Frame stocks proved to have been modified for what I don't know. They are ill-fitting on this revolver but don't fit any 1920s to 1940s K-Frame I have either, being to big. They sport a pre-war N-Frame serial number on the back.
