Outdoorsman and shooting sticks
Since I had surgery done on my left arm in April I have been away from shooting, until today. I didn't get good news from two different docs I saw this week, and I can honestly say there is a good chance my career as an LEO is pretty much over, its just a matter of time from what I was told. (On the bright side that will leave more time for practice). I have been using shooting sticks for a long time and I now plan on using them to get out this season with my Outdoorsman. I have a good load worked up, 12.5 grains of 2400 behind a 152 grain #358156 hollowpoint which on my chronograph averages 1,250 fps. I shot this target today using my sticks at 30 yards sitting on the ground with just my good arm. I put hanger bolts in the bottom of the sticks when I made them which lets it really stick in the ground. I have a bit more practice to do before season. This target's black area is about ten inches which is a pretty good representation to a deer's vitals. I plan on getting out more before season opens.

Mr. LaPell, sorry about your LEO career possibly coming to an end. Thank you for your service!! I have been told you were looking for some 357 brass with large pistol primer pockets. I have 30 nickel Peters cases if you would like them. In my 1950's vintage 38/44 Outdoorsman a load of 5.5 of Unique with Elmer's 173 grain cast boolit is my go-to load for years. Send me your address in a PM if you want the brass. Regards, Gary

Looks good to me. And when one door closes, others tend to open.
It's not so bad bein' an ol' retired law dog.
I've shot a very similar .38 load years ago when I was casting the Lyman 358156GC. Same powder and charge. Did great in a Ruger Security Six and a M28.
Yes, I know, those are .357's and could have used mags, but there was honor in shooting 'Skeeter's load'.

David-
God be with you and lead you to greener pastures. You'll continue in my prayers.
I think your gun will take deer fine at modest ranges and with precise bullet placement. I take it that you'll find a suitable ambush site and dress in camo, but good luck using the sticks in the woods. I think it can be done, though.
I hope that your prior agency at least gives you some medical pension, considering that your injury was in line of duty?
