With that serial number your gun probably shipped in the vicinity of 1955-56. At the time it your gun was sold, that model was called simply the .357 Magnum. In 1957, when the company went to a standardized model number system, the large frame .357 became known as the Model 27. You can call your gun a Pre-27 for short, because it is exactly the same thing but without a model number stamped on it.

My revolver looks exactly like the one pictured, and I have the same question. Wondering how old it is and approximate worth (although not for sale). Serial number S101XXX.

Holly, welcome to the forum. With that serial number your gun was probably shipped in 1954.
Value depends on condition, but in the last couple of years the Pre-27s with 3.5 inch barrels have been selling in the $650-850 range (gun alone, no boxes or accessories).

Thank you for the info! It's a piece I have inherited, and my knowledge of firearms is very limited. I think it's in good condition, and I know it's a good shot; I used it to qualify for my permit. Does dry fire practice risk damage to it? That's the first question I was trying to find an answer to today, and then some of the forums I found (like this one) got me on a different track.

holly, no dry firing will not hurt it at all, i have a 3.5in pre 27 as well and do it all the time, you can get snap caps if you would feel better about snapping it, dry firing will help you be a better shot have fun with your awesome pocket cannon

yes Drew my looks like that I thought it was around 1955 but not sure the bait shop I bought it from said he had, had it since 1955 and no one wanted to pay that much for a pistol.I bought it in 1972 I do not carry it because it feels like I have a cannon on my side. thanks for the info it is a really great shooting pistol.

While the "N frame .357 is probably a "Cannon" by todays standards in the early 50's the 3.5" barrel "N" frame .357 was the smallest .357 S&W had in their lineup,
This picture shows the N frame 357 (L) a "K" frame 38 snub and the tiny "J" frame 38 snub circa 1953 .
In the years since then S&W made .357 models on both the "K" frame and recently on the tiny "J" frame as well,
If your looking for something a bit smaller to carry you might consider one of those.
On a side note the pre Model 27's have become very collectable in high condition so make sure to keep them clean and wiped down to protect the finish.
Oh and we like to see pics of other peoples guns.
