First, ferdimarco, welcome to the Forum. The first thing about your request is to correct what you say about the caliber. When you say it is a "S&W military and police cal. 38 ctg" you leave out one important word. Looking at your picture, you can correct that and say that the cartridge (that's what CTG on the barrel stands for) is for the well-known and widely available 38 S&W Special. This is a good thing in most of the world as it is easy to find, perhaps the most numerous non-military center fire round for hand guns.

Officially, what you have is a 38 Military & Police Model of 1905 - 4th Change. Further, the serial number places it in the 1920s and assuming the grips are original, they suggest this time frame as well. You can confirm the grips came on the gun by looking for the serial number to be marked inside the right grip panel, probably in pencil. It has what appears to be a 6" barrel (as measured from the face of the cylinder to the muzzle) which is a little less common than a 4 or 5" barrel. Condition appears quite nice, and I am sure it would be a very attractive piece if available here in the States, and with the distance, I'm sure it's a treasure there in Argentina as well.

That's about all I can say from what info I have. I hope it will be of help to you and perhaps some other members will chime in with additional info. Again, welcome to the Forum.

Regards,
Green Frog

I agree that this is a 4th Change from the 1920's. Seems to be in really nice condition, too, not even the checkering on the grips being worn much, if at all. I doubt if it was carried much.

Welcome to the forum. I cannot add any other information but to say that the pistol looks to be in beautiful condition. Congratulations.

I just returned from a visit to your country. My wife and I really enjoyed the scenery and people. Food and wine also topped our expectations.

Windy-

Please go to The Lounge and tell us about the trip. I'm really curious. Argentina is a place that I've always wanted to visit.

I met a couple of cute girls here from Cordoba a couple of years ago, and talked with the director of the Domingo Matheau arsenal in Rosario and his wife at the SHOT show one year. Know the wines there are usuallly from Mendoza Province, and becoming better, if not yet usually as fine as the best from Chile. I think they make a lot of Malbec and some Merlot. Not sure about the white wines.

Do they really have those open air cafes selling good carne asada in the bigger cities?

Can you buy high quaity gaucho knives there still? Did you drink the mate tea? (Sorry; can't do accentos on this keyboard. Anyway, give us an account of the trip! )

I wonder if this gun was owned by someone well inland, away from the salt air in coastal cities? That may be why it's so nice.

Welcome, ferdimarco; now you've got us all thinking about your beautiful country. I've got a friend flying back from BsAs right now, who just sent me a picture of the steak he had last night at Cabana las Lilas. I'm dying to go back.
