Default .22 outdoorsman quandry & questions

just picked up an outdoorsman from a local auction house..

But it has me puzzled......

it has the large trademark stamp on the right side of a second model, however it has a long action of the first model

it also has the early style adjustable sights, with two screws on top, and not the "micro" style sight.

and my understanding is the .22 outdoorsman started with #632132

But, this one is #486999... numbers match on the butt, cylinder, and barrel.
SO what exactly do I have?

You're upside down: the S/N is 666987.

The order to move the trademark from the left side of the frame to the sideplate was issued in December 1936. Guns produced in 1937 and later had the larger logo over there.

Everything's Jake. That'll be a great shooter.

Some of the S&W stampings are real hard to read - even with magnification. All yours took was a sloppy 4 oops 7 and a bunch of 6's, 9's, or 8's and the number can make sense whichever way it is viewed. kinda cool - depending on how one feels about a 666xxx s/n gun!

My limited database suggests serial number 666987 most likely would've shipped in late 1937 or early 1938.

Not asking what you paid, but did you have much competition at the auction, or pretty much have this one all to yourself?

not really much competition, the serial # was listed wrong in the auction and that might have thrown a lot of people off... It did me..
but there was only something like 26 bids on it , and it came down to three people....

I won it at 550.00 which I don't think is too bad seeing what their asking at other "Broker" auctions

That kind of luck sometimes happens. I picked up a very nice first year K-22 OD about three years ago at roughly half price because it had been inadequately described in the auction catalog. I don't know whether other potential bidders needed someone to tell them what it was, or whether they needed someone to confirm explicitly what they thought it might be. Either way, they kept their money in their pockets and the gun came home with me.

$550 is a great price for that gun.
