Default 38 S&W Special, US Service CTG'S date/value

Hello all,
I'm new here. Hoping for help in identification. I just got this gun handed down and just want to understand it a little better.

It has "38 S&W Special, US Service CTG'S" on the barrel. The serial number is 80268 on the stock and barrel.

The gun is red colored. It has the 5 screws and what seems like a long barrel to me.

There is a number, although it is very hard to read, on the piece right below the base of the barrel. I think it says 164.

Any help is appreciated.

Jason

You have a Model 1905- 1st Change from about 1906-7.
Unfortunately, the red color was caused by a reblue that did not go well.
Hard to judge from the small pics, and value would depend a lot on bore condition.
250-350, maybe.

Welcome to the forum,
The 164 # is a factory # to get all the match polished pieces back together during the assembly and finishing processes. It is also on the left side of the grip frame and the backside (inside) of the sideplate.

The serial # is the one you show under the barrel which is in 6 locations on the gun including the Butt of the grip frame.
