Welcome to the Forum. If this number is from the bottom of the grip frame, it has at least one too many digits to be a true S & W serial number. Photos would be a big help here also.

Welcome from Texas RJRabin. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

Not a serial number, more likely a production sequence number.

Yes, welcome. And let me repeat the invitation to post photos.

If photos are not possible, can you describe the markings on the gun? Is there a S&W logo? If so, it is on the sideplate or the left side of the frame? What is the exact cartridge designation on the barrel? Do you see the same serial number on the flat underside of the barrel and the rear face of the cylinder? Is there a letter prefix to the serial number?

Is this a round butt or square butt frame?

We can nail down the ID for you, but just need a little more info.
