4-screw K22 Questions (with vintage holster and pictures)
[UPDATE IN POST 34]
Hi all,
Just picked up my second S&W in less than a week; and it's another 4-screw! What are the odds? K2776XX 4-screw K22, in near excellent condition. I'm actually glad it has the minimal wear it does or else I'd feel bad about shooting it. The stocks do number to the gun. Here's the obligatory cell phone picture;
Now I've got a couple question for the experts;
Any idea what year it was manufactured?
The holster in the picture came with the gun; any idea what it is? There aren't any markings except for "K 6" which I assume means 6" K-frame.

Congrats on a fine early "Transitional" 4 screw with earlier "High Speed" hammer.
According to the SCSW it was probably made in 1956.
Cool holster too
Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks for the date; 1956 is the year my father was born! When did they convert from 5-screw to 4-screw in the K22?

Nice sixgun.
The holster "looks" like a Hunter when they were making them with floral carving but I do not think Hunter would have marked it "K 6".
I think Hunter was preceeded by Colorado Saddlery which was preceeded by Heiser.
Maybe a Colorado Saddlery? But I would think it would be so marked. As well a Heiser.
We have some very keen leather folks here, you might want to re-title or start another thread with a header saying "Vintage holster with pics and questions" or some such.

Thanks for info, I'll let this thread play out but if nobody knows then I'll post another one. The gun didn't have the original box so I'm guessing that it's spent many years in that holster. Thankfully the gun shows practically no holster wear; about the only "wear" on it is a slight turn line. Very excited to take it out next weekend to shoot!
EDIT- I was able to change the title of this thread so hopefully it will catch the right guys' eye! Thanks again.

That's a nice looking K-22 my friend. Don't be surprised
if it multiplies in your safe. I bought my first one and shot
it and soon there we're three in my safe. Good shooting,
smooth actions, fun, inexpensive to shoot all day with.
Whats not to like....

Great looking revolver. I agree with the 1956 date. I have K275992 that shipped November 1956.

Just a guess,but the holster looks like a Heiser/Keyston.

Very nice K-22 and holster! Thank you for sharing! Just be aware that K-22s breed faster than lab rats!
Blessings,

Very nice pair. The K-22 is a fine score by itself, but that holster makes it a super deal! Forum member turnerriver is very knowledgable about vintage gunleather, hopefully he will be by to provide some insight.

F.T. is right, IMO. I believe that is a Sportsman brand holster- a budget offering by Heiser-Keyston. Here's another one to compare:

Awesome, thanks guys for the information! I believe you're correct as it is very similar to the holster you posted a picture of, turnerriver. I'll try to get a better picture later tonight.

The engineering change to delete the upper side plate screw on K-frame revolvers was issued in September 1955. The first model to incorporate the change was the Combat Magnum that was introduced in January 1956.

Does that mean there are no 5 screw pre model 19s?

Thanks! No worries, I'll take your word for it. Might take a look when I get a chance just for fun.

Jim...the first Combat Magnum, K260003, was completed on December 15, 1955. It has a 4-screw frame (3-screw side plate).

Hate to ask this as I had no intention of selling it, but does anyone know what the holster is worth? I am going to have to send the K22 to a gunsmith and am trying to offset those costs by possibly selling the holster.

I posted in your other thread also. This really ticks me off. Incompetent morons are everywhere including in the gun culture. It is imperative to express your exact and total expectations in any and all transactions, or someone will flub it up. I would be beyond furious if this happened to me. My blood is up and I don't even know you!! I sure wish you luck.

You might want to post the serial number here and you'll have thousands of eyes looking out for it on the auction sites and at gun shows!

I received a phone call from Phoenix PD today and the gun has been recovered. It was pawned by a homeless person a short time ago; the police spoke to that person but he is saying that he received it from someone else at "the shelter". I now have to go through what the detective called a "pawn hearing" so that a Judge can decide if the gun belongs to me or the pawn shop as we both have an interest in the gun. I asked if there was a good chance it would be awarded to the pawn shop and they reassured me that there was a 99% chance I would be awarded the gun....still, I question why this is even necessary? Whatever the case may be, they said the next "pawn hearing" is in March 2013 so I will not see the gun until then at the soonest.
