Default So let's just say.... UPDATE with Pics

....there could be a .38 Special, M&P, Postwar, Pre-Model 10, in my future. If there was, and the S/N was C1812XX, The SCSW indicates 1948-1951. Does anyone have one near that S/N that might be able to give a more narrow date range?

Yes, I know that S&W didn't ship in S/N order, so without a letter, no exact date. I'm just wondering; just in case there is a .38 Special, M&P, Postwar, Pre-Model 10, with the S/N C1812XX in my future. If there is, there could be pictures maybe by next weekend. Maybe, if there is one in my future ;-) Thanks!

Cheers,

Rick

There were guns with serial numbers near that one that shipped in 1951. There were also a few that didn't ship until 1952, so without a factory inquiry it's going to be pretty hard to feel confident with 1951 (though that's the year I would think more likely).

So... Let's just say that you joined the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association ..

And let's just say that then, you probably and most assuredly would have access to Mr. Jinks..

And let's just say you put in a request for a shipping date

Let's just say the you would be Guaranteed THE RIGHT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION

Seriously.. the best $60.00 you will ever spend..

The $60 is to join the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association. Best $60 I have ever spent also. The letter is still $50 as far as I know.

Sal's point was that $60 gets you annual membership in the SWCA, and as a member you can obtain the shipment month and year for any gun directly from Roy Jinks. If you want the full shipment date and destination, that's still a letter and that is still $50.

Which reminds me I have a couple of guns that I should not put off lettering any longer...

I wish I could agree that I have gotten useful info from the letters. I obtained maybe 20 over the years and don't recall ever learning anything interesting or valuable. I am just unlucky, I guess.

And, the forum he posts responses to shipping date requests is searchable, IIRC. So, you can get close by bracketing your serial number.

Default Well here it is

I went through with the transaction. It is in fairly nice shape. S/N matches on the bottom of grip frame, rear of cylinder, and the barrel flat. The grips do not number to the gun though (I knew that going in), but I think they are the correct style. Also, there is a small chip on the left grip panel. I did find the sliver of wood in the wrapping when I got it home. What is the best way to re-attach it?

This week I will see how it likes wadcutters at the range. I like it!

Cheers,

Rick

Hey Rick,
I like it!!!!!!!! and never saw a Smith that didn't like wadcutters!! My older Mod 60 was not as accurate with semi WC's but loved regular WC's (both flat and HB). Good luck with your new treasure and keep us posted with your range report!!! Take care Semper Fi, and God bless......cordell...
