Thanks for the comments Gentlemen. For the record - the top open drawer are N Frame Grips and the bottom are K/L Frame grips.

The other drawers are for some of my Colt and J Frame grips (or Stocks if you are a Colt guy).

Here's another interesting story - the Pre-War N Frame Magnas in the picture were originally bought without the medalions in them. I paid $7 or $8 for them. Other than the medallions removed, they were in like new condition. The original owner must have bought himself a nice set of stag grips and had the medallions tranferred to them. I bartered for a set of beat up Pre-War N Frame service grips that somebody tried to fit to a K frame gun and used the medallions from them for these grips. Here is what they looked like when I bought them:


The picture also shows a Registered Magnum I bought that came with an excellent set of Cokes on them. They made great take-offs when I replaced them with a different set of Pre-War Magnas. I'm saving the pristine set of Pre-War Magnas for a Pristine Registered Magnum (which I will probably never be able to afford).



Here are some well worn Pre-War N-Frame Service grips and a S&W Grip Adapter (I used to buy these up too):

No Medallion/Brass Medallion/Silver Medallions. I like how they look, but Magnas feel so much better to me.

Plenty of good guns wearing rubber grips our there, there are also many good aftermarket alternatives. Here is a set of genuine Ivory K frame grips I picked up that I am still looking for the right gun to mount on:

Wieipedia!! As I understand, S&W mostly used Brazilian Rosewood for their stocks. While the genus is the same, the woods are different and should not be lumped together. The Genus Pinus (Pine) has many species (White, Red, Jack, Scotch, Loblolly, etc.) , which are all different and distinct in nature. The walnut stocks used by S&W was mostly Juglans Nigra (Black Walnut), but other genus species are Butternut, California Walnut, English Walnut, etc. These species all differ in appearance and silvics characteristics.

I bought this pair in the late 1970's, from the San Francisco Gun Exchange. The grip
maker was a good friend of the Posner family that owned the store, but I don't
remember who it was. I bought several pairs at the time, but subsequently sold all but
this pair.

I had some Brazilian rosewood left over from a job in the 70's. It's the prettiest wood paneling I have ever seen to date. The wood grain changes color from Brown, to Gray, to a reddish. It's awesome rich looking wood.

I purchase nothing but firewood grips for my s&w revolvers. There on eBay for around $38, $42, $59 a set for n frames. There from Thailand. The really Purdy.

We need some firewood pics!! I have looked at them, but, I can not decide.

Well, the wind stopped, and I went out and plinked for a while.

I love the look/feel of the wood, my favorite K-22 has wood.

BUT,

this gun just feels good when shooting.



U G L Y , yea, but the grips perform.

I was looking real hard for grips in rosewood for this one, but, I think I will stay with the Gumby grips - at least until I run out of ammo!!

I like this one with rubber grips, too.



Maybe I need a soft wood combat grip ~ the best of both worlds

I just love to drool over the many beautiful grips in this thread . Something about a magnificent pair from the '50's that make them as desirable as the guns they once went on . Some of those smooth N frame targets are to die for , and a set of deep dark Coke's with fancy grain in mint condition are enough to bring me to tears ......

They looked enough like my other Rosewood Stocks that I just had to buy them. The 66 stamped on them sort of interests me, if they are actually factory it wouldn't surprise me if they stamped the S/N on both panels if the gun were S/N 66, I would expect that might be a special gun?

Six - they are absolutely Rosewood. I'd guess that they are late 50's / early 60's.
The significance of the two digit numbers is to keep the two wood panels together til the end of finishing (of manufacturing).
Here is a set of J Rosewood Magnas with similar stamping.

Ended up with some non-relieved K frame rosewood targets (pretty sure, sometimes you guys surprise me by telling me I am wrong, my rosewood lust may blind me a bit at times.)

In any case, they are pretty as heck.

I haven't seen many around. Those Rosewood N Frames on my 5" 27 here are pretty much my favorite factory stocks, I couldn't resist pairing them with the K frames which don't have the same kind of profile, but seem to be the same wood. Maybe with a few repairs, I can't quite tell if its just natural variation in the wood or if someone has tinkered with them.

In any case, they seem to go well on the pre-17. They feel really nice too.

I love rosewood stocks, and after seeing the Eagle smooth rosewood Classics, i just had to dress my 28-2 4" and 6". Great thread and absolutely beautiful stocks !!!

Can you guys give me your opinion?

These were labeled Ebony, but I'm not sure. They look an awful lot like old rosewood to me. I do however have rosewood on the brain so I am wondering if that's my issue.

I vote Ebony,,, why would they be black on the inside??

Well, they arrived, pretty sure a really dark rosewood now:

I really had to think long and hard to come up with a gun that might have Rosewood stocks on it. This was the last Ladysmith they made before going to the 357 J Frame. The only one rated +P and the last one to have solid stocks. Circa 1991. It's a 60-7 and had very brief window of production.

I first noticed the beauty of rosewood in 1969 when I purchased a Bear HC300 recurve target bow. It has some of the prettiest (I think) Brazilian rosewood I have ever seen. Kept that bow for over 30 years, even after I no longer competed in archery.
